I developed and teach the upper level seminar Mental Health and the Legal Profession for the Fall 2024 semester. This course leverages research findings from psychology and neuroscience to explore the intersection of mental health, performance, and professional identity development for law students and lawyers. Topics include anxiety and stress, depression and suicide, anger management, grief/loss, burnout, compassion fatigue, substance abuse and process addictions, eating disorders, impaired cognition, over-functioning, navigating law firm culture, and preparing for a satisfying legal career.

Ed Ergenzinger, JD, PhD, is a patent lawyer, neuroscientist, and adjunct professor whose personal experience battling bipolar I disorder motivates and informs his mental health advocacy, writing, teaching, and speaking.After a cycle of mania and depression left him hospitalized, unable to work, broke, and owing a mountain of taxes and debt, Dr. Ergenzinger collected Social Security Disability benefits as he struggled to regain his health. With medication and therapy, he has been able to return to the practice of law and has become a mental health advocate and educator.Dr. Ergenzinger regularly writes and speaks about mental health issues, and has developed a law school course on mental health and wellness in the legal profession.

I am a US patent attorney with over 20 years of experience. I've worked with with clients from around the world, ranging from solo inventors to Fortune 500 companies.
