I was employed nearly 31 years years with the State of Ohio Dept. of Taxation - Audit Division specializing in Sales & Use tax. 25 of those years were spent in the field as an auditor conducting audit reviews of many large complex multi-jurisdictional taxpayers across various industries. During my final 6 years with the Ohio Dept. of Taxation, I was a Sales & Use Tax audit manager responsible for the oversight of anywhere between 5 and 10 field auditors. I also participated as a team leader in the development and training of all Audit Division auditors in tax-technical advanced audit training related to conducting audits on construction contractors.For the past four years, I have been employed by Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP as a state and local tax accountant. I joined the Vorys law firm in June 2010. Current duties include the review, research and analysis of client records with respect to compliance regarding State of Ohio sales and use tax rules; regulations and reporting procedures; analysis of block and statistical sampling methodologies utilized in client audits as well as client representation and management of the sales and use tax audit and refund processes through resolution and completion. As a representative of Vorys, I also participated as a presenter at the 20th Annual Ohio Tax Conference covering the topic of “Ohio Use Tax Audits…Preparation, Practice & Opportunities.” The presentation discussed the proper use tax documentation that should be maintained during the return process; preparation for and conduct during a use tax audit; communications with the auditor prior to audit commencement; procedures and techniques used to complete an audit; and utilizing various procedural agreements embraced by the Ohio Department of Taxation to streamline the audit process.
