About Eric Au
I'm a Software Engineer who studied computer science, mathematics & genetics. The curiosity of thought-provoking genetics inspired me to pursue technical background in computer science and molecular genetics. My software problem-solving skills and knowledge of molecular biology allowed me to both generate experimental data and write software to analyze the results. It is incredibly motivating when I look back on the knowledge I have accumulated, to realize how all my areas of expertise can work together to answer questions at the intersection of computer science and biomedical research.Find out more:https://edotau.github.io/

Eric Au work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Software Engineer, Full Stack
I develop full stack web applications. Day to day I'm responsible for AWS cloud infrastructure and DevOps to improve cloud batch jobs, optimizing cost and resource allocation. I provide computational support for scientific analysis with R&D experiments and enable cross functional team efforts.
Software Engineer, Bioinformatics
Built scalable automation, testing infrastructure (DevOps) for continuous integration and deployment (CICD) using cloud compute engines, storage buckets, and data warehouses (GCP). Engineered computing pipelines for scRNA-SEQ and enhanced T-Cell-Receptor discovery analysis toolbox. Developed high quality software to optimize R&D Life Sciences software solutions.
Data Scientist
The power of interdisciplinary knowledge was on full display when we used cutting-edge genomic sequencing technologies to uncover molecular genetic changes in stickleback fish that are associated with adaptive evolution. I led this research project which included identifying and collecting samples, performing DNA extractions, ligated sequencing adapters onto billions of DNA fragments, and using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to generate DNA constructs suitable for sequencing. After generating sequencing datasets, I leveraged my computer science background to write software to provide new insights into stickleback biology. Genetic variants, especially large segments of DNA, are heavily penalized by the alignment algorithm and result in variant reads being reported as unaligned—throwing away true biological information. We worked to implement a computational framework to represent all common alleles within the reference genome to improve our read mapping capability and downstream analyses. The computational model represents the reference genome as a graph where nodes are genomic segments, edges represent the order and orientation of these segments, and a path through the graph represents a possible allelic variation. The graph is a fundamental concept learned in computer science and can be a powerful tool when applied to genetics. Modeling genomes as a graph to represent all common alleles improves genome diversity by incorporating genetic elements from multiple populations, a fundamental and impactful change to the way genetics is carried out.
Senior Research Associate
I managed mRNA-Seq analysis on responses to physical activity from a cohort resulted in a comprehensive molecular map that accelerated the development of therapeutics and exercise recommendations. I developed sequencing data transfers from local servers to Azure Cloud and established cloud computing infrastructure that ensured fast data delivery to collaborators and clients. I designed DNA/RNA isolation assays at production scale which optimized workflow and reduced cost.
Senior Lab Technician
I was responsible for replenishing supplies and basic molecular biology experiments to increase efficiency and quality of all laboratory operations
