Profile bio

About Ed Prescott

I have all the skills necessary to succeed as a developer, but I have the mindset and disposition of a tester. It's just objectively more difficult (and to me, more interesting) to assess quality than it is to code something up and declare it done. It seems unfair I should have to choose, couldn't we all just be software engineers, and leave it at that?I have excellent written and verbal communication skills, I love being part of high-performing teams. I enjoy the juggling between technical excellence and business needs, between "do it right" and "do it right now". I know how to provide emergent technical leadership as appropriate, I get a lot done, I whistle while I work, and I care about my teammates. Most of all, I have intense curiosity for learning and how the world works. Sometimes, I am looking at the big picture, perhaps in search of a small joke that explains the world. Other times, I can bite into a small detail that doesn't make sense, dive in, and come back with a serious bug that nobody knew about but all of a sudden we need to fix. I have all the personality I need to be comfortable with what I know and what I can do, and to realize how much more is possible.

Listed skills include Agile Methodologies, Software Design, Software Engineering, Test Automation, and 46 others.

The team I work on owns back-end order reporting services for Ticketmaster.com, one of the world’s biggest eCommerce websites, with 26 million unique visitors monthly. We use Agile development processes, and I participate in each phase with quality in mind, reviewing stories before sprint planning for testability, defining quality needs during planning, being a go-to resource on our team for design and coding of tests, tools and infrastructure. I have enjoyed immersing myself in cutting edge SOA design, Java, Groovy, Git, REST, JSON, Eclipse, IntelliJ IDEA, Jenkins, Atlassian tools, SoapUI, Linux, Tomcat, WinSCP, &etc. I spend most of my time with test automation – planning, designing, implementing, executing, reporting, &etc, but I also coach my peers, handle one-off investigations of service issues, and communicate status towards making release dates to meet business objectives. I love to identify, evangelize, and execute on engineering changes that efficiently improve quality.Tools written:Library for comparing Jackson ObjectNodes. There were many test scenarios, especially in A/B testing, where I needed to know exactly where and how two different JSON responses were different. I wrote a function to recursively navigate and compare any two JSON objects, and log exactly where and how the two are different. This made it easy to analyze large volumes of responses and find patterns.Provide automated status reports on sprint release candidates by using REST interfaces to reconcile status JIRA, Gitlab, and deployed servers. It’s very nice to easily know exactly which fixes have been checked in but not deployed, deployed but not yet ‘Verified’, scheduled but not yet checked in, &etc.Validate configuration of deployed servers by analyzing data read from servers in different environments. A little bit of REST/JSON/Groovy was all we needed to save time (and sanity!) by making sure our deployed servers were configured how we thought they should be.

Senior Software Design Engineer In Test

Seattle

As one of Nordstrom’s first SDETs, I worked on the back-end Web Content Management team, which was responsible for publishing new items into Nordstrom’s online store, mobile tools, catalog RSS feeds. We used Agile methods, but I didn’t really fit into the IT environment, so I moved on, and I wish them all the best.Tools written:Used C# and several client protocols – OData, REST, SQL – to reconcile web content data from multiple points along Nordstrom’s internal content publishing pipeline, finding and reporting on failure cases where desired publishing changes were not properly reflected throughout the system. This allowed us to measure which junctures were more or less reliable, and where we should investigate next.Used C# and an internal deployment of WebPagetest.org to provide automated and in-depth performance testing for page loads. In this project, we were re-designing how product listing pages for Nordstrom.com were constructed, and we needed to be sure that page load times were only getting better.

Jun 2013 - Sep 2013

Senior Software Design Engineer In Test

Redmond, Wa

Reduced the amount of time required to put new service capacity into production from four weeks to four hours. This was accomplished through a combination of process improvements and individual contributions. I defined and evangelizing a new and more scalable process for the team, I wrote PowerShell-based tools to assess the quality and completeness of new deployments, as well as turning new capacity live. This allowed us to much more quickly surface and address issues before they became blocking. I personally released about ~25,000 newly deployed servers into production.

Sep 2011 - May 2013

Senior Software Design Engineer

Microsoft, Exchange Server Test Infrastructure

Redmond, Wa

I fixed several bugs across various components of Exchange’s world-class test infrastructure system for building code, defining and scheduling test passes, deploying test configurations, and executing and reporting on test cases, including reliability, duration, code coverage and diagnostic failure information. One individual contribution I made was dampening the noisy effects of false failures in flaky test cases by automatically rerunning test failures. This increased the reliability of pre-checkin test passes. I re-designed how our test infrastructure reports on crashes during test passes, surfacing information like whether a given crash is new or already known. I owned the design, specification and implementation of these projects, which included significant changes to our test harness, as well as modifications to other components. This work was done in C#, against SQL Server. I am proficient in writing queries, stored procs, &etc.

Sep 2009 - Sep 2011

Senior Sdet, Exchange Server

Microsoft, Exchange Server

Redmond, Wa

During this time I worked as a test architect, reporting directly to Exchange Server's Director of Test, coordinating progress and priorities with all of Exchange's Test Managers, and leading several cross-team groups of IC's.I led groups dedicated to test architecture and code shared throughout the team, Performance testing, Security testing, managing configurations and deployments in the lab. I got all 150 or so Exchange testers to design, author and execute their multiple-machine test cases within the same architecture, using the same test code libraries. I led the design and helped write in C# a diagnostic plugin for our test harness. This extensible component of our custom test harness ensures that the system under test is in its expected base state, allowing Exchange SDETs to author and maintain test cases that are smaller and simpler, yet also more reliable. The diagnostic plugin also provided a means for test cases to share code that gathers additional information on test failures, making failures easier to troubleshoot, and defects easier to resolve. I created and administered four semesters of an internal training program I called "Exchange U". Due to its positive influence on the engineering culture of the Exchange organization, promoting collaboration and showcasing innovation, I received a Gold Star cash bonus.

May 2007 - Sep 2009

Senior Sdet

Microsoft, Exchange Server

Redmond, Wa

Responsible for testing the IIS SMTP service, its pluggable interfaces, and the Exchange Server’s protocol plug-ins. I enumerated, wrote and executed test cases, and later automated these test cases when Exchange started having a central automated test lab. I wrote Exchange’s first end-to-end automated BVT (“Build Verification Test”) that submitted email and validated it was delivered correctly. When the .NET platform emerged, I wrote a programmable C# test client and server that are still in use across the team today. Later I worked on Exchange’s back-end store, where my principal accomplishment was refactoring the Pluto test tool into logical units; namely, a UI, test cases, and a library for use in test cases.
