Educational Leader Leveraging Skills in Program Management and Relationship BuildingA passion for education and the outdoors led me to an amazing opportunity at the beginning of my career: teaching K-6 students about the environment in an outdoor setting. The opportunity was at Inside the Outdoors, a unique experiential learning program operating within the Orange County Department of Education. Over the years, I progressed within Inside the Outdoors as it expanded, becoming Program Administrator in 2000. In this capacity, I led 100 team members in providing environmental science programs serving up to 150,000 students, teachers, and community members annually.I’m proud of our work at Inside the Outdoors, especially since the organization operates entirely with money raised from donors, sponsors, grants, and fees.Moving up into a leadership role challenged me to find creative solutions, like a partnership I recently developed that promoted Inside the Outdoors at no cost to the organization. One of the experiences I’m most proud of is a program I created and launched that provides experiential learning for students and their families, involving parents for the first time in the organization’s history. This included securing $6M in funding for the first four years. I also discovered that I truly enjoy building relationships; I conducted a successful outreach effort to school districts, fostered strong donor relations, and collaborated effectively with corporate partners like Boeing and Disney. Our work has been recognized with two Governor’s Environmental & Economic Leadership Awards--I felt very honored to go to Sacramento and accept the award on stage from the governor. My long tenure with Inside the Outdoors is due to my love for education and strong interest in creative and experiential models for learning. I’m passionate about initiatives and programs that enhance and improve education for the leaders and innovators of tomorrow.
