I localized national policy issues for the newspaper’s readers in southwestern Colorado, including coverage of public land issues and the continued fallout from the 2015 Gold King Mine spill. After receiving senate press credentials, I attended committee hearings, met with officials and interviewed members of Colorado’s congressional delegation on the Hill for original stories. Although the internship was only supposed to last for the fall 2015 semester, I was extended through the summer and ultimately wrote almost 60 articles for the newspaper. In conjunction with The Durango Herald's local and state reporters, I also interviewed U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner, as well as Rep. Scott Tipton, for a special six-month anniversary feature on the aftermath of the Gold King Mine spill: https://durangoherald.com/goldkingWhile at AU, I had the opportunity to participate in a weeklong on-the-ground reporting trip to New Hampshire to cover the 2016 presidential primaries through a special presidential primaries course. I followed candidates around the state and attended rallies, campaign stops and meet-and-greets to write original articles and help create a video documentary about the primary. I wrote several articles for The Durango Herald while I was in the state, including one about a Super Bowl-themed campaign event Carly Fiorina held on the day of the game: https://durangoherald.com/articles/101266-in-n-h-fiorina-campaign-mixed-politics-with-a-big-game-party Show less -
