After an absence since 2006, it's a pleasure to rejoin the Commercial Construction team and Global Real Estate Department at BCLP. Many of my former colleagues at Berwin Leighton Paisner (as it was previously) have gone from strength to strength and built an exceptionally able team. I am delighted to be advancing the firm's wider goals, whilst providing service delivery and strategic support to our clients and local teams.

I relocated to the UK's south coast in early 2013 and made partner in 2017. I am a passionate supporter of urban regeneration, particularly in the Solent region. As a specialist construction lawyer I support well-planned development and sustaining the rich natural environment of our National Parks, beautiful coastline and local culture.Key recent projects include providing long-term counsel on the construction infrastructure aspects of an international supermarket’s growing network of distribution centres, facilitating the fast-track expansion of Metro Bank’s branch network, and assembling a portfolio of cladding remediation projects following the UK’s 2017 Grenfell disaster. I have also advised on procurement issues and construction contracts on half a dozen leisure centre projects, including the Grade 2 listed Seymour Leisure Centre, in London.

In 2006 I relocated east to experience the rapid rise of China, particularly in two special administrative regions: Hong Kong and Macau. Qualifying as a local lawyer, too, I was able to advise on a broad range of construction projects - from a piling dispute at a local school, to the $12bn mega-development known as Macau's Cotai Strip, and the fall out during the Financial Crisis.I advised Las Vegas Sands in resolving significant arbitrations concerning delay and disruption claims, as well as other commercial contracts and disputes. I advised the HK Government and provided training to many of the local industry institutions.Culturally, I have been exposed to the sensitivities needed to advise professionally in a demanding and unfamiliar environment. I bring that skill set to all my work and seek to build trust and a collaborative approach to getting transactions done efficiently and safely.

I cemented my career in construction with two years at the leading construction practice in London. I was taught by such leading lights as John Hughes-D'aeth and Nazir Dewji. In what spare time remained I completed my post-grad MSc in 'Construction Law & Arbitration' at the University of London's King's College.Example experience of note:- Advising UK property developer in connection with air-conditioning defects, subsidence issues and cladding failures at a commercial business park in Coventry. Drafting the dispute notice and successfully concluded a settlement agreement shortly thereafter.- Advising local UK government on aspects of pre-let and speculative developments and mixed use regeneration projects at Bath Western Riverside and the Liverpool city centre Paradise Street Project. Taking a wider perspective and can-do attitude to harmonise the many different interest groups and bargaining positions.- Office projects such as the redevelopment of London's Mondial House into the 50,000 sq/m Watermark Place; the redevelopment or construction of UK regional business parks (at Reading, Coventry, Guildford and Sevenoaks) as well as landmark buildings and specialist arts projects (such as the refurbishment of the Almeida Theatre, London and the construction of The Turner Centre, Margate).

After paralegal roles in firms in Toronto and Sydney, I completed formal training contract with the London and Tokyo offices of Magic Circle law firm, Linklaters. I had departmental experience in property, major projects, capital markets and corporate/commercial, then settled into the construction team, where I then qualified.Two years of intense exposure with the then best Real Estate team in London was a sound footing for my career. For example: Advising UK institutional clients including pension funds and banks on property development, purchases and sales. Rapid due diligence risk analysis of the adequacy of construction documents to satisfy funding or disposal conditions.Assisting as a junior lawyer throughout a £34m adjudication arising out of the delayed construction of a PFI-procured detention centre.
