Banking found me after Chapman High School. Neil Dietrich and Ed Grosser with the Chapman State Bank were men of character and commitment to the community. They started my banking career and helped me attend Kansas State University. I had the good fortune to work for the Walter and Alan Bell family at Citizens State Bank of Manhattan for 5 years. I met my bride at the bank and we were wed at the Danforth Chapel on the campus of KSU. For the next 12 years we made Pittsburg, Ks our home and I learned, admired, and worked for Charles Chenoweth and Steve Matthews. I learned every facet of banking and was afforded a lot of opportunities. The National Bank of Pittsburg became Bank IV Pittsburg. Our son, Jason, was born in Pittsburg.Our family moved to Wichita after a promotion to the holding company of Bank IV. I had the opportunity to observe a lot of good managers. The sale of the bank dispersed a great team of bankers far and wide.Steve Matthews moved to INTRUST Bank in Kansas City and gave me the wonderful chance to move to Ottawa and run the bank that INTRUST purchased from First National Bank of Ottawa in 1996. It was like coming home to move to Ottawa, a family owned bank, and a stable community. Over the past years the bank has seen many transitions of owners and name changes. INTRUST divested their interest in Ottawa with a sale to the First National Bank of Medicine Lodge. The bank’s named changed to First Bank of Ottawa and later to SolutionsBank. My relationships and customers in Ottawa have been so supportive through all the transitions. The SolutionsBank management team of George Cook and Mark Parman were very talented and very enjoyable to work with but 2008 simply could not have been anticipated. They taught me valuable lessons of integrity during troubling times. The bank is back in the hands of family ownership under the flagship Arvest. My value of community banking is as strong as it was when I began my career in Chapman, Ks.
