Developing a platform to enable CI and CD for developers in a polyglot organisation, promoting microservices to Kubernetes with Helm. The intention is to reduce developer cognitive load by extracting the complexities as much as possible.Over the past two years, my team has been responsible for managing and hardening the existing Jenkins X setup and providing support to teams to write pipelines to promote their services through multiple EKS clusters, whilst encouraging automated testing and security verification throughout.I have been heavily involved in the migration from Jenkins to a SaaS alternative for our application pipelines. * I've been instrumental in the security analysis around this new product, ensuring that developer data is safely segregated from the third party* This involved Terraforming AWS config around IAM Policies and AWS KMS* Liaised with both the third party and our Security team to ensure the high standards required for a FinTech are met* Designed resources structure to use the principle of least privilegeI’ve also helped add automation pieces to the Jenkins pipelines including:* test execution and log fetching in the instance of errors* contributing multiple Open Policy Agent policies to our internal Golang CLI to validate Helm charts and Dockerfiles to encourage best-practices. These give developer feedback in an unobtrusive manner directly to GitHub PRs* Safely waited for long-running processes (such as ephemeral environment startup), with plenty of feedback to the developer to help debug issuesMore generally, I have always pushed to enable developers to help themselves where possible. Be that by providing documentation on common issues, or introducing video tutorials for more Operations-related tasks which a developer may not be so comfortable with. Helping developers to understand the infrastructure they use and empowering them to make the best use of it is always at the forefront of my work ethic.

Currently in a small team implementing a reporting platform for FinKit. It consists of numerous Spring microservices, which use Sumo Logic’s API to process the eventing data before storing in Google Datastore. It highlights challenges in ensuring long term audit trails are accessible, available, protected and accurate. All of this with a 12-factor app design taking the forefront of any design decisions. Encouraging contract testing for the multiple microservices involved.Leading a team tasked with maintaining platform reliability. This generally includes, but is not exclusive to, ensuring our deployment pipeline is healthy, our environments’ stability is maintained and that every piece of code can become production code automatically.I have a vested interest in our internal developer environment that we distribute to developers globally, and have been its core developer for the past two years. I also gave a talk on this at Cloud Native Wales to nearly 100 people which led to external developers trying what we achieved. I’m learning Concourse in my own time to automate the upgrade process of the environment.I’ve previously been tasked with normalising our logging strategy. This involved converting all logs to a JSON structure to ensure easier analysis for our 24 hour operations team. I’ve written multiple automation scripts to remove labourious upgrades across the ever-growing list of microservices. I’ve been involved in migrating between backend databases (Cloudant, CouchDB, and Google Datastore). I helped migrate our services from Scala to Java. I’ve encouraged developers to use the then-new features of Java 8 where they were useful, particularly lambda functions and streaming.

I have been evaluating the Hortonworks and Cloudera platforms, and their usability within a data lake project.I have implemented a Kafka producer, which will be part of the new big data initiative. This will be the first point that all data is sent to, and then existing data stores and applications will subscribe to Kafka.I am pushing for regular code reviews and I have written a code review checklist, which our team is now using in weekly meetings.I am putting together a proposal that we refactor an existing module, which currently writes the same data to both Cassandra and Kafka. Instead I think it should remove the Cassandra direct write, and use our Spark Streaming project to read from Kafka and write to Cassandra. This simplifies the module by creating a single output.I have written a batch Spark reader for the metrics data. I added several MapReduce functions to convert the large data into summed values, according to JSON matchers, and then wrote these as counted tuples to MongoDB.My previous work was adding to the existing test framework to allow new Cucumber tests to be written. The feature would take live streamed metric data about device activity, and push it to Graphite via Spark Streaming functions, which would then display it live in a Grafana implementation. The test needed to be able to hit the REST endpoint, and verify the input to Graphite. This has involved working with the developers of the test framework in order to extend the framework, as well as training the testers on my team to understand basic Java development in order to implement new Cucumber tests themselves. And I wrote the module to interrogate Graphite, for use by the testers.

I implemented a new payment process with one of our customers. The team is spread across Cardiff and London, and I was the technical lead for the Cardiff developers. Whilst doing my normal duties of developing, coaching the junior staff members and code reviewing, I improved the communications by ensuring daily update calls and encouraging staff between the two sites to work together and share knowledge. I encouraged the use of BDD and TDD throughout. As well as ensuring all staff are getting involved with reviewing core documentation like 3rd party specifications to ensure we all have a good base knowledge of what we will be implementing.Previously I moved the features of our existing mobile web application to a REST interface. As the most senior developer for the project I took charge of the team in order to ensure people had work to do and to manage upcoming work. I was the main point of contact for technical queries for both technical and non-technical staff. I updated rest specs, including adding improved validation to requests. I also implemented code which covered the full stack from receiving the initial request, through our core platform and integration server to our mock financial institute.I worked on two features for Monitise’s core product. I added a new message type to our messaging platform, and enabled Velocity powered templating on the messaging platform. Our messaging implementation is deployed into Fuse and the routes were defined with Camel. I gained useful knowledge on ESBs also.Prior to that I worked on a REST interface for our core VISA engine. I trained the other developers whilst implementing the solution. I enforced the JBehave strategy and test structure. I peer reviewed all the code, and ran demos as well as encouraging my colleagues to do TDD wherever possible.

My initial project which involved adding multiple marketing techniques to the various brandedwebsites. I introduced jQuery as a standard to the company as well as making use of theirStruts/Java architecture. I also introduced Google Analytics to these websites to improvemarketing. I was highly commended for producing excellent test plans and writing very detailedand comprehensive business and technical specifications. My final role was technical lead onthe online portal which has been released. I was chosen due to my technical ability, companyknowledge as well as my strong relationships with colleagues.

I developed their e-risk software, an application used for conducting housing surveys. I haveworked on the new asbestos release for recording and updating previous asbestos risks. Itinvolved heavy use of hibernate as well as some SQL. It was based on the Spring framework

Expandedknowledge on JSPs and servlets, which interacted with a SQL database on the back end.Integrated Thales public key cryptography library into Java applications. Encrypted data withsmart card certificates. Verified and signed by Thales' own SafeSign Authentication Server.
