I have been evaluating the Hortonworks and Cloudera platforms, and their usability within a data lake project.I have implemented a Kafka producer, which will be part of the new big data initiative. This will be the first point that all data is sent to, and then existing data stores and applications will subscribe to Kafka.I am pushing for regular code reviews and I have written a code review checklist, which our team is now using in weekly meetings.I am putting together a proposal that we refactor an existing module, which currently writes the same data to both Cassandra and Kafka. Instead I think it should remove the Cassandra direct write, and use our Spark Streaming project to read from Kafka and write to Cassandra. This simplifies the module by creating a single output.I have written a batch Spark reader for the metrics data. I added several MapReduce functions to convert the large data into summed values, according to JSON matchers, and then wrote these as counted tuples to MongoDB.My previous work was adding to the existing test framework to allow new Cucumber tests to be written. The feature would take live streamed metric data about device activity, and push it to Graphite via Spark Streaming functions, which would then display it live in a Grafana implementation. The test needed to be able to hit the REST endpoint, and verify the input to Graphite. This has involved working with the developers of the test framework in order to extend the framework, as well as training the testers on my team to understand basic Java development in order to implement new Cucumber tests themselves. And I wrote the module to interrogate Graphite, for use by the testers.

I implemented a new payment process with one of our customers. The team is spread across Cardiff and London, and I was the technical lead for the Cardiff developers. Whilst doing my normal duties of developing, coaching the junior staff members and code reviewing, I improved the communications by ensuring daily update calls and encouraging staff between the two sites to work together and share knowledge. I encouraged the use of BDD and TDD throughout. I added a new message type to our messaging platform, and enabled Velocity powered templating on the messaging platform. Our messaging implementation is deployed into Fuse and the routes were defined with Camel. I gained useful knowledge on ESBs also.Prior to that I worked on a REST interface for our core VISA engine. I trained the other developers whilst implementing the solution. I enforced the JBehave strategy and test structure. I peer reviewed all the code, and ran demos as well as encouraging my colleagues to do TDD wherever possible.
