I undertook a Summer Internship in the Local Government and Territories Division within the Department. I was positioned in the Norfolk Island Branch and worked closely with the Norfolk Island Legislation, Policy and State Services team. My role included undertaking several legislative functions in regards to the introduction of Commonwealth and State-based legislation to Norfolk Island as part of the ongoing reforms work.I had the opportunity to work with internal and external stakeholders such as other Federal Government Departments and NSW State Government Departments. I reviewed and amended legislative instruments and drafted Norfolk Island ordinances such as declaring Show Day a public holiday on Norfolk Island which were reviewed and submitted to the relevant authority to sign. I was taught how to complete a brief to the responsible Minister and how to submit documents to the Executive Council. I successfully completed a brief and submitted these documents as well as other documents from the team to the Executive Council. I researched a variety of different issues that were current due to the transition of Commonwealth and NSW legislation on Norfolk Island such as liquor licenses. I commenced research into the Bankruptcy Act (NI) such as the background to the legislation and key differences between the Commonwealth and Norfolk Island to prepare a brief to relevant Government Departments to extend the Commonwealth Bankruptcy Act to Norfolk Island.

The responsibilities of this role were to chair and facilitate meetings of the Disabilities Collective, act as a spokesperson for students with disabilities to the University, community and the government, ensuring the University adequately supports students with disabilities and working with relevant University departments to safeguard the accessibility of UNSW facilities and infrastructure. The role included working with state and national counterparts, report on campaigns and present both a written and verbal report to Council at each meeting. For example, in my short time as the SRC Disabilities Officer I ensured an accessible door was installed for the Collective room to ensure students with disabilities could access the room.
