​As part of the State of California’s effort to strengthen community-wide resilience against wildfires, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) has partnered with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to develop a state home hardening initiative to retrofit, harden, and create defensible space for homes at high risk to wildfires, focusing on high socially-vulnerable communities and providing financial assistance for low- and moderate-income households.The California Wildfire Mitigation Program (CWMP), encourages cost-effective wildfire resilience measures to create fire-resistant homes, businesses, public buildings and public spaces.   Mitigation measures such as home hardening, vegetation management, defensible space, and other fuel modification activities provide neighborhood or community-wide benefits against wildfire.

Provided essential emergency management assistance to a vast stretch of coastal counties and local governments, encompassing 500 miles across 16 counties, while serving as a conduit for local and regional insights at the state level. Successfully spearheaded the relocation of the office, incorporating a training center and staging facility. Collaborated with elected officials at the state, county, and local levels and local non-profit organizations to devise innovative solutions for meeting the needs of a disadvantaged community devastated by a wildfire. Directed a competent team of 16 members with a budget of $4M, ensuring efficient and effective emergency responses.* Created/advocated for a successful state-level budget initiative that expanded field staffing by 35%.* The Coastal Region office was housed in a temporary, poorly secured building for eight years, negatively impacting morale and the Cal OES brand. After 15 months of effort, a lease for a suitable space was signed. The new location received positive feedback from staff, executives, and partner agencies.
