Teaching, research and related projects in silviculture and sustainable forest management, supporting students and collaborating with colleagues to advance the mission of the Institute of Forestry and Conservation in the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design. As a member of the Graduate Department of Forestry, I am able to support and co-supervise students interested in silviculture research and based in Ireland or the United Kingdom.

Our focus is research, technical developments and knowledge mobilisation in silviculture and forest sciences. Our current themes include uneven-aged silviculture, forest regeneration and the contribution of forests to public health. Most of our projects are applied and contribute to evidence-based practice or policy formulation. Wherever possible we publish in international and peer-review publications, and present findings at conferences and professional development events. We also have a strong interest in the use of woodlands for human health and well-being, with a strand of research focusing on both the benefits and risks associated with public health in forested settings.

I am responsible for coordinating the module in Multi-Purpose Woodland Management, which is a component of the BSc (Hons) Environmental Management and the BSc (Hons) Wildlife and Conservation Management degree programmes. The module runs throughout Semester 2, February to May each academic year.

This role is primarily concerned with silviculture research and delivery of the TranSSFor Project, which is focused on the transformation of Sitka spruce stands to continuous cover forestry. A wide range of data are being collected, including tree physiology, forest stand dynamics, harvesting operations and production, and economic performance. The study is the first of its kind to investigate the early-stage transformation of Sitka spruce plantations, with comparison of low, crown and graduated density thinning regimes at two sites in Ireland. The current phase is expected to run from 2017-2022.

Leader of a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to forestry education at primary, secondary, tertiary and professional levels. Pioneered a range of initiatives and new approaches, including a series of short courses, online learning resources within a forestry knowledge hub, significantly expanding the work of the society, and its influence on forestry sector training, skills and education issues. In addition, delivered a series of lectures, published papers and served as a media contact for forestry issues. We developed new partnerships and collaborations across the forestry sector, and with several educational institutions.

Research and teaching in silviculture, with specialist interests in reforestation, silvicultural systems, forest conservation, integrated resource management and forestry education.Supervisor for several post-graduate research projects.Teaching focused on senior undergraduate courses (BScF, 4th year), Master of Forest Conservation (MFC), Master of Science in Forestry (MScF) and PhD courses.Research work included forest stand dynamics, seedling physiology with reference to plantation establishment and uneven-aged silvicultural systems. Consultancy and advisory roles in sustainable forestry, including a project with First Nations communities in northern Quebec.

Research on the below-ground biology of Corsican pine, Scots pine and Sitka spruce. Studies concentrated on the root system architecture, morphogenesis and the physiology of root regeneration in a range of environmental conditions. The work was applied to improving our understanding of planting stock quality and promoting plantation establishment success.

- started this role as Forester in Training, but assumed role of District Management Forester after several months. - responsible for delivery of forest management programme, especially dealing with private woodlot owners in southern Ontario.- worked in boreal forest of northern Ontario on inventory and growth/yield studies.- developed a special interest in forestry education, contributing to woodlant management courses at the University of Toronto (Continuing Education) and the Ministry of Education/Ministry of Natural Resources "Focus on Forests" program.- interest in woodland establishment, silvicultural systems and sustainable management of broadleaf woodlands. - skilled in tree marking and hardwood stand structure analysis in conjunction with management of woodlands according to selection silvicultural systems.- responsible for the development and approval of woodlot management plans across my area of the district (>40 plans).- responsible for management and annual reporting for the Crown-owned Agreement Forests in my area of the district.

Summer work as a research assistant in the tree development lab of Professor G. R. Powell. Projects included tree crown architecture, tree phenology, morphogenesis and reproductive biology. Species studied included eastern larch (tamarack), eastern hemlock, jack pine, white pine and red spruce.

A summer project as research assistant in forest ecology. The major focus was the response of balsam fir (Abies balsamea) following a major ouotbreak of spruce budworm in the Cape Breton Highlands. We did detailed studies of stem analysis, tree crown architecture and reproduction. The work was led by Dr H Piene and contributed to a long series of research papers and reports.

I undertook a series of short contract and training posts to gain practical experience in all aspects of forestry and tree nursery work in Scotland. My employers included Hopetoun Estate, Ben Reid and Co (Forest Nursery), Forestry Commission (Glentrool Forest) and East Lothian District. I developed a wide range of skills and completed training in chainsaw use, forest establishment and forest measurements.
