About Edwin Tracy

Mr. Tracy's expertise includes thin-film synthesis and characterization, optics and electro-optics, vacuum technology, and laser materials processing in the semiconductor/integrated circuit, photovoltaic, thermoelectric, electrochromic, solar thermal and hydrogen technology areas. In 1988, he was nominated for IPO's "Inventor of the Year" Award for a "Laser Sealed Vacuum Insulation Window". In 1989, he was elected to the "Wall of Fame" by the Board of Education in his hometown of South River, N.J., In 1996, he received a prestigious "R&D 100" award for the development of a vacuum-insulated catalytic converter. In 2000, DOE recognized him for his technical contributions to the catalytic converter project, which was selected for the Energy 23 Award (top 23 scientific accomplishments in DOE's 23-year history). In 2007, Mr. Tracy received NREL’s “Outstanding Business Collaboration” award for his work with thin film batteries. In 2009 he was honored with a second R&D 100 award a Buried Anode Thin Film Battery technology. In 2010 Mr. Tracy recieved the Colorado Governor’s Award for high impact research relating to the development of electrochromic “smart” windows. In 2011 Mr. Tracy was designated by Battelle Memorial Institute as “Distinguished Inventor” for his creativity and achievements in “bringing new technologies to the marketplace and enhancing the quality of life” and in 2013 his bronzed portrait was displayed on Battelle headquarters' Wall of Distinguished Inventors in Columbus, Ohio.

Mr. Tracy became associated with RCA laboratories in 1967 as an honors student on a work-study project from the College of New Jersey studying closed-tube vapor deposition of electro luminescent quaternary compounds. Upon completion of his B.A. in Physical Science in 1968 (Magna Cum Laude), Mr. Tracy abandoned his career in education and returned to RCA Labs as a Research Associate in the Recording Materials Processing Group working on open-tube vapor deposition of ferromagnetic semiconductors.… Show more Mr. Tracy became associated with RCA laboratories in 1967 as an honors student on a work-study project from the College of New Jersey studying closed-tube vapor deposition of electro luminescent quaternary compounds. In 1971, he joined the Glass Research Group to work on a variety of pioneering projects including surface ion depletion of glass, injection of ions into glass from a glow discharge, dc-plasma deposition of amorphous materials, and basic studies into the thermoelectric effects of ion-conducting glasses. In 1975, Mr. Tracy became involved with integrated circuit technology as a member of the Solid State Process Research Group.
