Created over 50 test cases to validate established requirements.• Configured DeltaV control modules, alarms and display graphics to validate features and hotfixes for customer-specific applications.
Graduate Safety Chair
• Chaired the Chemical Engineering Safety Board, increasing active participation from 3 to 10 active members.• Wrote and submitted proposals for initiatives to improve safety across research and teaching laboratories, such as implementing an consistent experiment labeling system, deploying chemical inventory stations to all labs, and conducting a safety survey.• Led joint efforts with EH&S and the Chemistry Student Safety Organization to improve lab safety across several buildings on campus.• Started a semi-weekly safety bulletin consisting of a Safety Mondays Bulletin.• Current efforts are focused on creating a department safety communication system to improve building evacuations and communication between department leadership and student body during these.
Graduate Research Assistant
• Screened 500+ ionic liquid candidates for use in wastewater treatment using COSMO-RS modeling, reducing the set to 20 ILs which were synthesized, and their aqueous solutions were characterized. The experimental results were used to develop a process model that showed that the proposed process used 40% less mass and energy intensity at similar yield when compared to the benchmark.• Ensured laboratory equipment integrity by implementing a preventative maintenance schedule for vacuum pumps, gloveboxes, and shared analytical instruments.• Supervised and mentored high school teachers and undergraduate students pursuing research projects under NSF-sponsored programs.• Co-taught the introduction to material and energy balance course in hybrid format.
Safety Officer
• Reduced waste management cost by 20% by implementing a log system for shared solid and liquid waste containers.• Oversaw 3 resolutions of laboratory incidents, working with EH&S to prevent future instances.• Improved department-wide chemical inventory tracking by aiding in the rollout of barcode printer and scanner system across all laboratories in the department. • Ensured laboratory equipment integrity by implementing a preventative maintenance schedule for vacuum pumps, gloveboxes, and shared analytical instruments.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Prepared and led weekly recitations and office hours; prepared and graded exams and quizzes for undergrad chemical engineering mass and energy balance course
Co-Chair Of The Diversity, Equity And Inclusion Graduate Recruitment Committee
• Analyzed historical data on applications, admissions and retention of graduate students from underrepresented groups at the CSE. We found that the rate of admissions was similar for cis-white male students vs minority students (both domestic and international). However, application rates were dismally lower for Black, Native American and Pacific Islanders groups than for Euro-american students. Hispanic students were applying at a much lower rate than Euro-american students, but still higher than the aforementioned groups.• Co-authored and presented a proposal for the CSE leadership to improve application rates from minority students, based on the results mentioned above. One of the proposed initiatives was approved on the spot, while others are being considered, budget approval pending.• Coordinated a graduate school orientation and recruitment event - GEM GRAD Lab - through the GEM Consortium. The event will be co-hosted by UT Enginering and Rice University.
Csd Engineering Intern
• Set the foundation for the development of a continuous manufacturing process for a Phase III API by quantifying the effect of continuous crystallization and wet milling parameters on the API particle size distribution using microscopy and DLS. Results showed that the continuous process yielded smaller crystal size than its batch counterpart.• Designed a high throughput experiment to screen for solvent mixtures to be used in thecontinuous crystallization of acetaminophen as a model API for the process studied.
Chemical Engineering Intern
• Updated P&ID documents and standard operating procedures using management of change process in collaboration with operators and plant leadership, resulting in improved operational efficiency and better compliance with industry standards.• Improved safety by developing and supervising the painting of a series of pathways for staff to walk on, reducing the amount of transit-related near misses by up to 10%, and by identifying piping in boiler room using ANSI A13.1 compliant labels. • Validated a microbiological content test to be used in the quality control of polymer emulsions used in personal care products, resulting in a 98% reduction in testing time. • Evaluated and coordinated the upgrade of a gasket plate & frame heat exchanger to a brazed model, which would reduce maintenance requirements by up to 90%.• Evaluated and suggested materials for the revamp of a hydraulic oil reservoir used to operate a filter press. Improvements included sampling valves, new level meter and a breather with a desiccant bed.
Global Technical Operations Intern
• Developed system to track responses to a compliance-related questionnaire by preparing spreadsheet tabs for our team to specify the date of responses, their adequacy, any follow-up actions, and any additional comments. • Created a list of feeders to apply on continuous processing trials with materials that can’t be fed accurately with screw feeders, with which equipment was suggested for testing on cohesive materials that showed difficulty when using a screw feeder.• Prepared a procedure to test a new bulk packaging design that will improve the identification of API prior to their implementation in manufacturing. Improvements include a 75% reduction in testing time, elimination of risks to workers and material, and protection of material integrity.
Chemical Engineering Intern
• Improved process safety by implementing a more stable, fixed pipe and hand-controlled valves system between slurry and several finishing tanks to replace a flexible hose that had to be moved between finishing tanks• Led reorganization of warehouses using the 5S method. This reduced the risk of accidents and injuries within the warehouse, while also facilitated the access to stored materials. No incidents were recorded within the first 2 months after reorganization and warehouse capacity was doubled.• Designed and performed trials to evaluate the integration of different xanthan gums and new raw materials into products, which reduced costs of production. Reduced expected trial time by 25% by performing tests in parallel instead of sequential steps.
Corporate Development Program Associate
Rotated through the four Offices in the NSPE-UPRM Chapter and completed different tasks, varying by Office. The tasks by office included, but were not limited to:• Marketing Office: Supported Communications Manager in coordinating Technical Writing Workshop• Networking Office: Supported Academic Branch in coordinating a PACE Software Workshop as requested by one of our sponsors.• Financial Office: Supported in the creation of a Receipt Book with which to keep track of the income and expenses of the organization.• Operations Office: Developed an Attendance Tracking and Event Creation system to be used in keeping track of membership activity in the NSPE.• End of Year Challenge: Offered a workshop in research principles and how to write a research proposal.
