Effective "whole building" and "smart building" designs require client expectations transposed to construction documents with more design possibilities along the way than we've ever seen. Many of the most elegant and intuitive designs now have a dynamic component capable of changing a user’s perception of architecture, creating comfort, inspiring an emotion, preventing infection, collecting data, or allowing humans to live and work more organically in some way. Building systems interface with occupants and transfer information between devices in a way that requires more than meeting energy code and IT mandates. We now use electrical gadgets and sequences to mimic an exterior world in the built environment, and the responsibility of designers, devices, and platforms has been expanded to include space planning and nonvisual effects on human physiology.
