Curricula Creator, Violin & Fiddle Teacher At FiddledancemusicFiddledancemusic: Teaching, Composing, Choreography #Fiddledancemusic 2001 - PresentI've been teaching music and dance for all ages since 2001. In addition to violin/fiddle instruction online and in Madison, Wisconsin, I lead sessions for children's museums and festivals featuring fiddle music, creative movement and folk dance. Students have described me as "clearly gifted," "warm and approachable," "intuitive," and "kind and patient," and "the best teacher I've ever seen." -
Composer, Performer, Singer At FiddledancemusicFiddledancemusic: Teaching, Composing, Choreography #Fiddledancemusic 2002 - PresentMy professional music and dance work has spanned two decades and a wide range of settings – including private lessons, original theater productions, workshops at children's museums, and visiting artist projects. A teacher and composer of traditional fiddle music, past albums include “Cows go Sailing” and "fiddledancemusic" (field recordings of live dancing and dance tunes). Lively, inventive performances feature original tunes and the traditional music that inspired them. I've worked as a soloist and a recording artist with a variety of duos and ensembles. My musical style's noted for its evocative beauty and rough-and-tumble playfulness, with a variety of influences including New England dance fiddlers. A collection of 55+ original compositions includes the #NeofaFarewell waltz. Reviews of my singing and fiddling performances as a duo with Jim Tolles include: "Both players are natural-born singers … a powerful performance … marked by front-porch informality and graced with superior musicianship." (Will Gottlieb of Maine's Coastal Journal). Tom Rota, managing director of Portland's performance venue One Longfellow Square, wrote that the duo sounds "like they have been riding the trail together for a long time ... gorgeous harmony topped with sweet playing from two experienced pros." Jim Tolles' projects have included performing/songwriting with Breakfast Special, and Skyline (featuring banjoist Tony Trischka, which pioneered the "newgrass" music of the 1980's). -

Performing Arts Teacher & ResearcherPerforming Arts Postgraduate Research & Teaching: What Makes Magic? #Whatmakesmagic 2019 - PresentWhat's the creative process that brings us 'magical' performance experiences? As a composer, choreographer, performer and director, I began wondering why sometimes audience members commented on their 'magical' experiences. I devised projects to test theories about how this happens (and why it sometimes doesn’t happen). This led to a formal research proposal that took ten years to write, which developed into this practice-based academic research and ever more questions! While focusing on doing research for this graduate degree, I'm offering reviews and feedback on your performance video/audio. I also offer coaching for teachers and for students. As an independent consultant (scroll through my profile to view some past clients/projects), I've provided qualitative data generation, analysis, and presentation, with a 'meticulous, supportive, and fully committed manner as a key team member' and 'an exceptional combination of excellent communication skills, interview data analysis (semi-structured and unstructured, thus requiring keen attention to detail and originality of integration), and the ability to deliver succinct, discerning presentations of findings'. -
