Managed a large international multi-institutional foundation-funded global health grant to study pandemic influenza. Contributed significantly to research project development including integration of high-throughput mutant virus screens (HTS) using semi-automated liquid handling and supporting technologies (e.g., a laboratory information management system or LIMS). Developed experimental plans, managed day-to-day laboratory operations, and analyzed data. Coordinated communications with collaborators and program officers. Developed research presentations. Wrote two successful instrumentation grants and contributed significantly to other applications and white papers. Recruited and managed laboratory and administrative staff. Had budget oversight responsibility (annual budgets ~$8-9 million). Specific skills: new project development and execution, HTS/LIMS and molecular biology expertise, grant-writing and reporting, developed expertise in molecular virology and knowledge of regulatory issues surrounding research with highly pathogenic influenza viruses and Ebola virus.

Planned and supervised the development of a unique academic core facility (fee-for-service) to perform yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) screens in a high-throughput system (HTS) using semi-automated liquid handling and supporting technologies (e.g., a laboratory information management system or LIMS). Protein-protein interactions identified in MIF were reported in leading peer-reviewed journals (including Nature, Cell and Journal of Biological Chemistry). Specific skills: operational concept development and execution, molecular biology expertise including Y2H libraries, grant-writing and reporting, scientific reporting, collaboration on scientific projects and software development, public speaking to scientific and lay audiences on biotechnology subjects, staff supervision and training. Provided leadership for core facilities, particularly in the areas of climate and diversity.

Directed the Summer Research Program for Undergraduates in Cell and Molecular Biology, summer 1998 (19 students) and 1997 (22 students) and organized the innovative Ways of Knowing-Biology course (~100 students/year). Wrote a successful renewal application (NSF) for the summer research program.Specific skills: Organized research experiences, seminars and other events in collaboration with UW-Madison research labs for undergraduates; grant-writing and reporting, student and faculty mentoring. Created a web site listing science projects and faculty engaged in hosting undergraduates in their labs.
