Approximately 435 hours of land-based marine mammal observation and passive acoustic monitoring (inclusive of night shifts).Approximately 30 hours of vessel-based marine mammal observation (dedicated photo-ID surveys). Collected sightings, behavioural, and acoustic data of fin whales, humpback whales and orca, primarily from land, but also on boat surveys. Improved my photo-id skills and learned to process photos for analysis using PhotoMechanic5. Assisted in practical maintenance: including the deployment of a static hydrophone which vastly extended the existing PAM network, and learning how to maintain hydropower and solar panel systems.

Funchal, Madeira Island, Portugal

Approximately 140 hours of vessel-based marine mammal observation.Collected opportunistic cetacean sightings data on the Funchal-Porto Santo ferry crossing and on a local tour boat for two months.Assisted in biopsy sampling and blow sampling of pilot whales & spotted dolphins. Worked independently, in a foreign country with no previous knowledge about the local area.

Engaged with the public, answering questions about our work and doing public awareness talks while collecting cetacean sightings data on local tour boats. Managed the national cetacean sightings database- communicating with members of the public that have submitted sightings to verify species ID. Gained photo identification skills, both in DSLR photography and the identification and matching process. Carried out land, boat, and line transect cetacean surveys, gaining a lot of experience in recording data in a fast-paced environment. Completed the Sea Watch Foundation training course "Surveying Whales and Dolphins".
