Applying innovative methods to complex health data sets

Longitudinal research examining the program impact on South African adolescents participating in HealthWise, a substance use and sexual risk prevention program. Longitudinal data are integrated into quantitative methods to examine developmental change over time. Primary projects include: first, examination of cohort differences between students born before and after apartheid that may be attributable to cultural and policy shift occurring throughout the last two decades; and second, use of a competing risks model to compare high and low leisure boredom groups to determine expected survival time to first sex and co-occurring risky behaviors (i.e., condom non-use, violence, and substance use). These projects are overseen by Drs. Linda Caldwell and Nilam Ram.

Instructor for Leisure and Human Behavior (RPTM 120). Introductory course examining core constructs and historical context of leisure, impact on major social issues, role in human development, and connection to culture and context.

Research and teaching assistant working with Dr. Camilla Hodge. Research projects include a meta-analysis of family leisure and family quality outcomes, measuring the impact of shared leisure time among siblings, and exploring youth voices during the transitions into and out of college. Teaching experience is focused on undergraduate research methods coursework.

Facilitated and developed existing events to evolve with community needs. Introduced new events for target populations underserved in our community. Developed dynamic sponsor relationships with local corporate partners. Managed and oversaw department interns including recruitment, training, development, and evaluation. Directed social media and campaigns for department including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Blogger. Coordinated all event marketing development and delivery. Controlled and prepared multiple budgets to reduce expenditures and improve revenue flow.

Front-line work in delivering community events to over 60,000 patrons annually. Major responsibilities included managing resources and inventory, recruiting and training over 500 volunteers, developing experiences for families with principles of experience industry management, and evaluation of events. Significant contributions: introduction of a new student internship program (resulting in more than 5,000 intern hours), creation and implementation of volunteer recruitment and retention program (increasing volunteer list from 12 to over 2,000), increasing partnerships with community organizations to expand events while reducing costs.

Worked with Drs. Keith Barney and Mat Duerden. Guest lectured and assisted with curriculum in courses covering topics of event and program management, leisure theory and contemporary issues, and inclusive recreation. Research projects included topics of program evaluation and adolescent development via study abroad and conservation programs.
