Field OrganizerMichigan Democratic Party Jun 2020 - Nov 2020Northern MichiganWhile working for the Michigan Democratic Party, I was responsible for the field operation in Leelanau, Benzie, Manistee and Mason counties. In my role, I worked to recruit and train volunteers to help elect the entire Democratic ticket, from the race for President all the way through local county positions. Some of my accomplishments include:--Regularly exceeding voter contact and volunteer recruitment goals while utilizing a fully virtual strategy. Because of the pandemic, all our organizing work, which traditionally requires tons of face-to-face interaction, went entirely online. Nevertheless, I successfully recruited dozens of strong volunteers which allowed Democrats to get their highest share of the vote in Leelanau County since 1964. --Training over 500 volunteers to communicate with undecided voters and to form voting plans with Democrats. I taught these volunteers how to phone bank, what to talk about to specific voters with specific concerns, and how to make sure each and every one made it to the polls. To do this, I created presentations and materials that could be accessed virtually so that everyone could do this work from the safety of their own home. --Cultivated a team of nearly 130 consistent volunteers who made thousands of calls per week into Michigan. Even though I couldn't be with my team in-person, I nonetheless forged strong bonds with volunteers from all walks of life, from college students to retired ministers, to create a powerful network that greatly increased Democratic turnout.--Coordinating with county parties and local candidates to dramatically increase volunteer capacity compared to 2016. Working with the county parties, I created newsletter content and pitch emails that we used to successful recruit volunteers for the first time and to keep folks engaged with the democratic process, even with a pandemic raging. -
Field OrganizerPete For America Feb 2020 - Mar 2020West TexasThough I did many of the same things organizing in Texas and Iowa, the different landscapes did set the experiences apart. Below are some of my accomplishment from my time in Texas. --Utilizing mass messaging tools and social media to reach voters who did not respond to traditional outreach efforts. There's no question that lots of people don't pick up the phone for numbers they don't recognize. That's why I taught my team (and myself) how to use social media as a powerful engagement tool. Whether it was helping my volunteers create the perfect Facebook post or crafting a witty tweet about a successful event, I made sure that our online engagement was strong during my time in Iowa and Texas. This proved especially valuable in rural Texas, where door to door canvassing was nearly impossible. Instead, volunteers could post and text their friends to make sure they knew to vote for Pete in the primary. --Pitching media coverage for our volunteer efforts in rural Texas media markets. Because of how large Texas is, our campaign split the organizers into media markets. As the organizer responsible for the Midland-Odessa, San Angelo, and Abilene media markets, it was my job to create media-worthy events, and then to secure coverage for them. Because of how Republican these areas are, the very fact that a Democratic candidate was holding events and exciting voters was new, and I both pitched and secured coverage for one of our organizing meets where I taught volunteers how to canvass and talk to their friends about Pete. -
Field OrganizerPete For America Sep 2019 - Feb 2020Des Moines SuburbsFor the Pete Buttigeig Presidential Campaign, I was the boots on the ground that helped win Mayor Pete the 2020 Iowa Caucuses in the western Des Moines suburbs. As an organizer, It was my responsibility to recruit and train dozens of volunteers on how to talk to their friends and neighbors about Pete, as well as how to win during the complicated caucus process. Some of responsibilities and accomplishments included: --Executing a relational organizing strategy to exponentially increase voter contact as compared to a traditional model. Relational organizing, which was pioneered during the Obama 2008 primary campaign, is the idea that the best way to convince people to vote for your candidate is to have their friends talk to them about it. I taught all my volunteers how to best engage with friends and acquaintances about our campaign, which led to a huge increase in turnout from first-time caucus-goers who attended because of the work their friends' did to convince them. --Managing 11 precinct captains and 65 precinct team members to win 9 caucus sites. I was responsible for 11 precincts in the West Des Moines suburbs, and for each individual precinct, I trained a team to lead us on caucus night. I taught them the details of caucus math, how to win people over at the door to caucus location, and how to make sure we won during the realignment period. Because of our hard work, we resoundingly won 9 of the caucus sites I helped to lead. --Writing engaging email, phone, and text scripts for use in volunteer recruitment. The Pete campaign gave organizers like me the ability to write our own email, phone, and text scripts to recruit new Pete supporters, and I put that to very good use. I created dozens of individualized recruitment emails and pitches, as well as text campaign that went to the phones of potential Pete supporters all over Des Moines. -
Communications FellowPete For America Jun 2019 - Sep 2019Des Moines, Iowa, United StatesBefore starting full-time as a field organizer, I worked as a fellow with the comms team at the Iowa state headquarters for the Pete Buttigieg campaign. During my time there, I gained valuable experience in what it takes to be an effective professional communicator, including:--Creating talking points on a range of issues (e.g. health care, rural issues, foreign policy) for use by staff in the field. The lists of talking points that I created for policy rollouts were invaluable to our field time, informing them about new policies and how to talk to voters about them. --Researching and authoring primers and one-pagers on media personalities and campaign issues. I wrote numerous primers for use by the media as well as our team on locations that the Mayor was travelling to so that everyone was prepared for and informed about the many small towns and counties the Mayor visited on his trips to the state. --Assisting in prepping the Mayor for interviews by monitoring previous candidate interviews and questions. I watched interviews conducted by local reporters who were set to interview the mayor and then wrote up memos about them, their interview style, and the types of questions they asked so the Mayor was fully-prepared for his interviews. --Compiling. news clips from local media for use by Iowa and national campaign staff. -
Communications InternPrecision Jun 2018 - Sep 2018Washington, DcPrecision Strategies is a strategic communications agency the works in the political, non-profit, and corporate sphere. My time at Precision gave me great insight into what working in an agency setting is like, and also taught me many of the skills that made me successful in my later work in politics. These include: --Conducting research and social media analyses for a diverse array of clients, including non-profit educational organizations and professional sports franchises in order to improve their online and social media presence--Compiling news and social media clip packets for national advocacy groups and Fortune 100 companies--Wroting and contributing to op-eds and letters to the editor for publication in national and local media outlets--Constructing press lists for local, state, and national issue-advocacy campaigns -
Campus CoordinatorOnevoice Movement Feb 2016 - Sep 2018Greater Chicago AreaI organize students and events on the University of Chicago campus to support a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. -
Development And Communications InternAll Chicago Making Homelessness History Jun 2017 - Sep 2017Greater Chicago AreaI worked to create a story bank to share All Chicago's impact with supporters and community partners, and conducted prospect research on potential donors. Writing the stories involved interviewing nonprofit leaders and those who have experienced homelessness and then synthesizing those interviews into pieces for use in promotional and fundraising materials. While with All Chicago, I also authored appeals letters for donors and managed All Chicago's social media feeds during events.
