I think language is the most overlooked tool at our disposal. As a high school English teacher, I await the inevitable question from students: “When am I ever going to need this in real life?”I offer my response in the form of a challenge: “Try to think without using language.” I chuckle internally as they furrow their brows while plotting to prove me wrong.The real joy comes in finding creative ways to guide them through this sequence everyday: If language is fundamental to thinking, and thinking is fundamental to our experience, then language is truly instrumental in how we navigate our lives. As a broadcast journalism student at Boston University, I honed my skills for taking an idea or event and using language to guide an audience from a point of unfamiliarity to one of understanding.As a media & music teacher, I helped students create their own stories to share with their peers. As an English teacher, I’ve helped students get a better grasp on their own use of language, and all along the way, I’ve used language to convince them that these were fruitful endeavors.In my free time, I’ve translated that love of language and storytelling outside of the classroom and into documentary film and music production. The best part of these journeys is that they’ve allowed me to connect with people from all different walks of life, and that speaks to the core of who I am. I am the person who always manages to be in conversation with a stranger. A common phrase out of my mouth is, “I met this person the other day, and they were telling me…” I am a communicator.
