The System Planning department is responsible for strategic power system planning to support the investment and operation of Australia's electricity markets and infrastructure as the economy transitions to net zero emissions by 2050. The department conceptualises and assesses long-term infrastructure projects, and conducts detailed reviews of power system security, operability and reliability. This professional engineering and economic analysis can trigger major and minor infrastructure investments, and supports industry and government in their operation. This is a critical function in AEMO’s overall System Design division, effectively defining the National Electricity Market (NEM) and gas market development needs and opportunities.

This information is used to support industry and government in their operation.The team coordinates major transmission planning activities across the country, including the production of the Integrated System Plan (ISP), which provides an independent, strategic view of the efficient development of the National Electricity Market (NEM) transmission grid over a 20-year planning horizon.

In Victoria the team is responsible for the ongoing economic planning of the Victorian transmission system in order to meet security and reliability criteria.

Working as a principal engineer in the Network Planning team, I provided leadership and coaching to other engineers. My specialty was in conceptualising, designing and evaluating new transmission projects. I gained significant experience in scripting power system studies such as power system stability (transient, voltage and small-signal), limit equation derivation, contingency analysis, marginal loss factors, short circuit analysis and electromagnetic transient studies. This experience was primarily using PSS/E, PSCAD and PowerFactory.

I led economic transmission investment assessments and provided both technical and strategic planning advice for the Victorian transmission network. I was responsible for delivering Transmission Annual Planning Reports and supported the Heywood interconnector upgrade RIT-T and other smaller economic assessments.

I worked as an engineer across AEMO's Operations and Planning departments. This included national planning studies, power system security analysis, power system investigations, network outage assessments, limits advice, load forecasting, energy adequacy assessments, reserve forecasting, emergency reserve coordination, frequency control assessment and under-frequency load shedding reviews.

As an engineer at NEMMCO, I broadened my knowledge of the power system and electricity markets through work in the markets, operations planning, systems capability, real-time operations, and network planning teams.

My first job in the industry was to develop a tool that loaded market modelling results into a database and provided visualisations to interact with the data.
