For 11 years, I taught at UBC, which sits on the stolen ancestral land of the Musqueam First Nation.I adopted a collective learning ethic where I encouraged respectful, active participation and critical discussion in my classrooms. I was the project planner, convenor, and host of an international expert forum that brought together participants from Canada, the US, the UK, Germany, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia to discuss issues related to openness, public engagement, and democratic decision making regarding animal research.

I was funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to conduct a public engagement study on openness and ethical governance of animal research. Specifically, I conducted stakeholder focus groups to explore issues around institutional and national animal-based research and the governance of animal research practices. I was responsible for securing grant funding, research design, assuring research ethics board approval, participant recruitment, focus group facilitation, qualitative data analysis, writing up results in the form of a peer-review publication, and dissemination of results (conference poster).

I was responsible for mentoring a student (YoungWook Kim) through a research project related to the openness of animal research. We created an online survey to assess how institutional openness affects public trust in animal research practices. In March 2014 YoungWook presented our project at the multidisciplinary research conference held at UBC every year. She came in the top three (out of 200+ student participants).

For the project we refined an existing study and recruited a new cohort of participants. In March 2014 Eugenia presented our project at the multidisciplinary research conference held at UBC every year. She came in the top three (out of 200+ student participants). As a result, she was further selected to go to Shanghai to present out project at the international multidisciplinary research conference.

I was co-founder and executive director of the Canadian Society for Humane Science - Canada's first and only national registered charity working solely to replace the harmful use of animals in teaching, research and testing with innovative technologies that are better for the advancement of science and human health.I established a successful, multi-faceted Humane Science Education (HSE) Program for schools. The Program teaches K-12 life science content, including internal anatomy, without using a single real animal specimen.I was actively involved in evidence-based policy work. I developed a web-based resource to facilitate the replacement of animals in undergraduate teaching at the University of British Columbia. This project started with university-level community engagement with instructors and students to identify barriers to and motivations for the replacement of animals in undergraduate education.This project was further supported by the BC Foundation for Non-Animal Research.

I was a research consultant on a qualitative research project that uses online public engagement to explore people's views towards the use of antibiotics in the dairy industry. My main responsibility was to use NVivo to code qualitative data - I was part of a three-person coding team who worked together to analyze the data.

I was an invited panelist for a university lecture series: Bringing the Collective Together - Nonhumans, Humans and Practice at the University. This series was open to the public and invited discussion about the practice of animal research on the university campus. I was invited to two panels, first to discuss regulatory frameworks for animal research in Canada, the US and the UK, and second to provide feedback on research projects related to animal research that I was involved in.

I was a Research Fellow in Guidelines Development. As part of my fellowship I conducted an interview-based study to explore people's views towards the creation and use of genetically engineered animals for research purposes. I was also involved in impact analysis to assess the feasibility of implementing new guidelines.I travelled extensively during my fellowship, and presented my work at various conferences, as well as conducting two work stages in the UK to work with the UK RSPCA, the National Centre for the Three Rs, the Universities Federation of Animal Welfare (UFAW), the Fund for the Replacement on Animals in Medical Experiments (FRAME). As part of these stages I also visited several different research facilities to learn more about the use of genetically engineered animals in research.

I was an member of the animal care staff team at UBC, providing primary care for animals before and after their involvement in research.

I was a research assistant on several projects related to the welfare of pigs in commercial housing.
