I also train and… Show more Let's Talk Science is a national science outreach program that positively engages youth in learning and skill development in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) areas, empowering their future and career prospects.As Carleton University's first Volunteer Coordinator, I am responsible for the recruitment and management of over 50 volunteers and respond to inquiries about registration and concerns while establishing a supportive and engaging environment. I also train and oversee our team leaders at Carleton University, ensuring that one to one support can be established for volunteers from various departments. As the Rural Outreach Coordinator, I organize monthly trips to rural areas outside of Ottawa and to remote regions in northern Ontario (Kashechewan, Fort Albany and Attawapiskat) and Quebec (Mistissini, Ouje, Kuujurapik, Whapmagoostui and, Kuujuaq). I establish educator contact and develop an activity program to ensure that curriculum related kits are presented and concerns and special needs are addressed. I collected data used to measure biological toxicity and sub-lethality of water and soil samples near various oil-sands activity sites using fathead minnow and chironomid tests. I extracted fatty-acid lipids residing in human milk samples and analyzed trans and cis fats in human milk samples using gas chromatography. The findings from my analysis exhibited decreased trans fats in Canadian breastfeeding mothers’ diet, confirming that the mandatory food labeling of trans fats in Canada and the recommendation of limiting trans fats to <2% and <5% of total fat implemented by Health Canada in 2007 significantly reduced trans fats consumed
