No matter the subject, any new knowledge is good knowledge to have. Growing up, this was one of the most common phrases said in my household and the reason why I said, “yes” to so many experiences that seem to have few to no common factors. Over the course of my adult life I have immersed myself in a multitude of vastly different projects, opportunities, and academic endeavors. My goal was to build a transferable skillset while simultaneously working to discover my passion and professional niche. Primary healthcare clinics, hospitals, mental health centers, research labs, non-profit organizations, childcare facilities, public schools, dance studios, those are some of the environments I have been fortunate enough to work/volunteer in that have nurtured the skills I confidently bare today. While I believe it's important to have a toolbox worth of skills, there is one I have strengthened more than others and one I think lies at the core of success and many other vital skills, communication. As generic and cliché as it sounds, while I was originally lost at the thought of embarking on one professional path, I knew I wanted to somehow work with people, to help them enhance their lives one way or another. Therefore, everything I ventured into involved just that. Each setting presented me with an opportunity to interact with people of diverse upbringings, ages, cultures, educational backgrounds, developmental stages, and abilities. In working with people we must know how to communicate; being able to successfully communicate with people involves tailoring one’s methods to their understanding, accounting for how messages are received by actively listening, and applying feedback to future encounters; having strong communication skills implies adapting and after years of jumping into various experiences my communication skills have evolved into one of my strongest assets.
