I have always wondered who established that at 18 years of age you must decide your career. At 18 years old I was starting to discover all the things the world had to offer and I didn’t know what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It was not until I realized how much my purchasing decisions were influenced by marketing that I started wondering how marketers could create such influential advertising. Upon that realization, I wanted to be part of a team creating content that catches people’s attention.I dipped my toes in the marketing industry with my own beauty Instagram account in which I shared with my followers reviews of the latest beauty products. I learned to create content based on my audience and built a community with my followers through Instagram stories. When an opportunity presented itself, I joined the industry as a Social Media Coordinator for a family-owned clothing company. In this position, I learned the basics of Shopify, influencer marketing, advertising, and email marketing. Through my strategic content marketing such as influencer collaboration, the follower count for the Instagram account grew by 30% during my time with the company. After seeing what I was able to achieve as I learned through the job, I felt I could accomplish more in this industry by pursuing a Business Marketing diploma. My time at Fanshawe College has been rewarding as I have gained immense knowledge which I look forward to applying to real-life projects as a marketer. Outside of school, at my part-time job as a supervisor, I put into practice some of the skills I have learned in school, such as using Adobe InDesign and Adobe Express to create the company’s monthly newsletter. I have also promoted customer retention through various sales promotions. I am excited to see what I can achieve in the marketing industry and explore the opportunities and challenges that will come my way.
