About Ellen Cherry

Emmy nominated singer/songwriter ellen cherry (lowercase letters intentional!) is a full-time touring and working performer based in Baltimore, MD. Mixing equal parts of pathos and humor throughout her songs, ellen cherry is mysterious and powerful on stage and her banter gives audiences a peek into a whimsical, curious mind. She seamlessly fuses her love of History, Poetry, and Literature with the Usual Suspects of Love, Loss, and Despair, with a powerful, commanding voice and skill on both guitar and piano. cherry has been recording and writing original material since 1996, and has shifted some of her time and talents towards producing a once-per-month live performance and interview webcast from her living room called “Listen In with ellen cherry,” which provides a platform for the best musicians in Baltimore, from all genres, to perform for the world. She is co-creator and Chief Visual Alchemist for a collaborative project called “Mobtown Moon”, which, in 2013, released an exciting new re-imagining of Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon,” both as a CD and as a live performance with over 50 musicians. cherry is currently working on a new set of recordings, due out in late 2014, to follow up on the heels of her most intimate work yet, a piano-based album produced by fellow songwriter Caleb Stine, entitled “Please Don’t Sell the Piano” (released in 2012.) She collaborated with paper-cut artist Katherine Fahey and filmmaker Michael Patrick O’Leary to create a short film of Fahey’s hand-cranked shadow puppet piece that was created for cherry’s song “Pickett’s Charge”. The film premiered during the Jim Henson Puppets on Film Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2012. In 2010, she wrote, recorded and performed a song for an Emmy nominated TV campaign and also composed the score for a shadow puppet piece entitled “Alonzo’s Lullaby”, which was awarded the prestigious UNIMA Citation of Excellence. ellen tours nationally and internationally.

Listed skills include Music, Recording, Pro Tools, Songwriting, and 22 others.

Portraits In Song

ARTISTIC STATEMENTPortraits in Song features the live performance of eleven original songs inspired by the stories of powerful women in history. The musical performance is accompanied by large scale projections of commissioned portraits by the artist Liz Downing.I’m ellen cherry. I am a musician, composer, and performer. I have created a performance piece that springs from my love of storytelling and my passion for history. The purpose of the project is to shift our attention away from imposed detrimental beauty standards and instead see women as powerful thinkers and doers.I want to celebrate women’s stories and highlight the value of their work. These stories guide us, inform us, educate and embolden all people. An incredible ripple effect will occur when women all over the world are allowed to flourish, and their work given its proper value. We can help to turn women’s ambitions and aspirations into actions that will affect incredible positive environmental and social change.
