While working in the domestic violence shelter, my main priority was providing a safe and comfortable environment for our clients to heal. I did this by conducting intakes, orienting new residents to the shelter, facilitating conflict resolution when needed, and providing resources and support. I also covered the 24-hour crisis line to ensure support was available to anyone in need of help.

In this project-based research internship, I built a model of life stages and common stressors to be used as a mental health communication tool. To do this, I conducted independent research using peer-reviewed and grey literature on hormonal, developmental, biological, and social changes in the body over time and the effects of typical life stressors.

As a Summer Fellow for Students Demand Action, I focused on registering college students to vote and empowering them to get to the polls. This required creativity and flexibility, as we were unable to do in-person registration drives on college campuses this year. Instead, I completed weekly phone banking, reached out to hundreds of professors to make informational class announcements, and created informative infographics tailored for multiple social media platforms regarding voter registration.

Using Life Cycle Assessments, my lab focused on finding dietary patterns that maximize nutritional benefits while minimizing negative environmental impacts. In my role as a student researcher, I conducted literature reviews of similar topics to add background information for journal articles, as well as edited original manuscripts. I also worked with a team to create a new database that tracks the health and environmental impacts of about 7,000 food items in the American diet.

As a patient care representative, I was the first point of contact for all patients. In this role, I scheduled appointments when needed, answered basic medical questions, directed calls to the proper staff member, and refilled prescriptions at pharmacies. This role also required a great degree of emotional support to patients, as well as cooperative problem solving to reduce barriers (cost, transportation, etc.) to care. This position provided me with a fluent knowledge of Electronic Health Records and strengthened my customer service skills.

At Clean Water Action, I traveled to neighborhoods all across Michigan to find supporters of our campaigns to keep Michigan's water clean, safe, and available. I talked to about 200-300 people a week about the work we were doing, raised donations for our lobbying efforts, and encouraged citizens to write letters to their representatives and officials who are in place to protect the best interests of the people. In my time in this position, I individually raised around $75,000 and collected thousands of letters to lawmakers from citizens.As a manager, I oversaw staff members by setting clear job expectations, monitored and assessed job performance, and provided feedback and coaching. I also worked to recruit new hires in order to build a strong staff of organizers.

At this job, I collaborated with staff members on projects such as fact-checking documents and organizing forms. I also took inventory and ordered needed supplies, sorted mail for the whole department, answered phones, and kept the office clean and organized. I learned how to pay extreme attention to detail, as well as how to balance multiple tasks at once. As I only worked part time, tasks would pile up on days I didn't work, so I had to learn which to prioritize, which would take the longest, and figure out the most effective way to get everything done.

As an intern at Growing Hope, I cared for and harvested vegetables on this one-acre urban farm, organizing weekly volunteer groups to help. I also went to farmers markets at least once a week where I sold our organic produce at low cost in a place suffering from a food desert. This was perhaps my favorite part because I got to interact with the people for whom I was growing the food. As a college student with limited cooking experience and a small budget, I could relate to them easily and introduce them to vegetables and recipes I myself had just learned.

At STAC, I oversaw and liaised with student organizations who rehearsed in our studio, assisted with their needs including painting and building sets and locating resources, as well as organizing the tools and supplies in the workshop. However my main job was to maintain a safe environment, making sure everyone was following rules and safety regulations.

This job taught me a great deal about the service industry and how to engage with customers in a calm and productive way. As I worked during the busy season at a high profile restaurant in town, I got the feel of getting things done, and getting them done quickly. As a waitress, I also learned extreme attention to detail, like who ordered what, what's going on whose bill, modifications to each dish, which drink went with which meal, which table wanted extra sauce, etc. While doing this, I simultaneously had to brew coffee, refill drinks, restock the straws and cups, deliver bread, fetch appetizers from the kitchen, etc. This allowed my ability to multitask to shine, a skill I've never lost.

Being my first job, I built a strong foundation for the work ethic later to come. Within my first two months here I was promoted and given a raise, and after five months was trained in every position in the store. Within this time frame, I had also started training new people, some of whom were much older than me. The managers jokingly called me "line leader", even though no such position existed. Despite only being 16 when I got the job, I maintained a strong work ethic throughout my employment there. I offered to stay late nearly every night and picked up any shift available, regularly working the maximum number of hours I could as a minor. I was scheduled nearly every single Friday and Saturday night (the busiest times), as well as every holiday and hectic occasion, simply because I did the job well.
