When they are used, they are most often based on multi-Gaussian assumptions that produce continuous fields or on indicator based two-point geostatistics barely resembling field observations. It is widely agreed upon that this gap between geological knowledge and most stochastic techniques is a main reason for the limited use of geostatistical tools in hydrogeology [Ghislain de Marsily et al., 2005].
