Project Manager: Adaptive Tricycles For Pediatric Amputees

Marquette Engineering Senior Design

Greater Milwaukee Area

I proposed my student generated Senior Design Project idea, to design an adaptive tricycle for a pediatric amputee, which was granted and funded. I took on the role of project manager and came into contact with a family who had two little girls who would benefit from the project - a 3 year old bilateral transfemoral and 4 year old unilateral rotationplasty amputees. The project scope included designing two adaptive pedaling mechanisms that would fit their amputation types, and manufacturing them until completion. Our main goal was to increase the girls' indepenence. The first steps included research on pediatric biomechanics, individual prosthetic specifications, and mechanical fundamentals. As project lead I managed contact with the family, weekly build updates, safety regulations, and budget. Two functional tricycles were produced, using locomotive and hip adduction pedaling mechanisms. The family was given the two tricycles following a final presentation and have since been adapting to their new bikes. The project was very rewarding and resulted in a strong connection with the family. Attached is a letter of recommendation from the father of the girls, Preston Cosgrove.

Prosthetist Assistant

Greenfield, Wi

Shadowed and assisted a local prosthetist, Joel Kempfer CP FAAOP, throughout my college career. I was introduced to and eventually assisted in upper and lower limb prosthetic CAD casting, fitting, and alignments. Further investments with Mr. Kempfer's clinic include Amputee Clinic at St. Luke's Hospital, data collection and processing for an amputee gait study, and a collaborative poster presentation at the AOPA (American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association) national assembly 2016.

Biomedical Engineering Student

Milwaukee, Wi

Graduated in August 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering and a major concentration in Biomechanics. My education included electrical, computing, and mechanical engineering fundamentals related to the medical device industry. Acquired knowledge came with data acquisition, prototype design, programming techniques, circuit analysis, and biomechanical materials testing. Highlights of my Marquette career include the imaging of 3D Osteoarthritis knee models, assembly and soldering of an EKG circuit, pathological gait analysis, and an in-depth Senior Design Project.

Sparc - Amputee Gait Research Assistant

Uwm Innovation Accelerator Mobility Lab

Wauwatosa, Wisconsin

Member of an interdisciplinary team to develop a clinical toolkit for real-time visualization of lower limb amputee gait during variable speed and ramped walking. Research included the evaluation of iPecs, Vicon Nexus, Bertec, and force plate data for 5 subjects with prosthetic limbs. The kinetic and kinematic gait research led to an abstract publication for the American Orthotics and Prosthetics Association (AOPA) conference, where I presented a collaborative poster presentation in 2016.Funded by the University of Milwaukee Wisconsin (UWM) College of Health Sciences Stimulus Program to Accelerate Research Clusters (SPARC).

International Research Praktikantin

Radspieler Zentrum Für Mobilität

Neubeuern, Bavaria, Germany

For 2 months in the Summer of 2015, I worked as a full time intern for a specialized orthothics and prosthetics clinic in Southern Germany. I became familiar with residual limb casting and component manufacturing in a shop setting, and was involved with patient care and German communication. I later led a team on the innovative research of a hydraulic casting system – The Symphonie Aqua System. Research included the effect of pressure calibration, casting materials, and patient position on the successful fit of the cast and test socket.
