Joined NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries through a highly selective scholarship program. The Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program recognizes outstanding scholarship and encourages independent graduate level research, particularly by female and minority students, in NOAA mission-related sciences of oceanography, marine biology and maritime archaeology, including all science, engineering and resource management of ocean and coastal areas.My independent graduate research contributed to the designation of new Essential Fish Habitats, closed to bottom trawl along Rittenburg and Cochrane Banks within the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. Using ArcGIS, I combined biological imagery data with geospatial data to describe seafloor habitats and associated biological communities targeted for conservation within the GFNMS. I identified, counted and sized all fish and invertebrates, and categorized seafloor substrates found within remotely operated vehicle imagery and recorded these observations into a comprehensive Microsoft Access database. I generated species distribution models and habitat suitability maps for threatened species of rockfish.
