I'm the author of the novels "The Book of Esther" (Tim Duggan Books/Crown, 2016, PB 2017), "Brookland" (FSG 2006) and "The Testament of Yves Gundron" (FSG 2000). My fiction, essays, and criticism have appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times Book Review, the Times Literary Supplement (UK), the Los Angeles Times Book Review, Aster(ix), Moment, Guernica, Bookforum, Poetry magazine, Conjunctions, American Short Fiction, Story magazine, Lit Hub, and Tablet.org. "The Once and Future Capital," which appeared in the Summer 2014 Massachusetts Review, received a Pushcart nomination.In 2006, I received a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. That was a good year! In 2011, I received a grant from the Sustainable Arts Foundation.I am currently Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Oberlin College, though in 2023-24 I am on research leave. Before Oberlin, I taught for the graduate Creative Writing Program at NYU, at Smith College, at Columbia University, and at Yale, Princeton, Bard, and Eugene Lang College (the New School). At Oberlin I also serve intermittently on the Jewish Studies Committee and as faculty advisor to Chabad, despite identifying as a Reconstructionist. In general, I promote what in Judaism we call a "big tent"—a structure with open sides, welcoming to all.This is also how I approach teaching and program design, with ever-evolving inclusivity. The longer I teach, the less I believe in the necessity of critique. Sometimes it can come in handy, sure—but more central to my teaching is discussion: real dialogue between peers and between student and teacher, with the goal of helping students build the skills to tell the stories they want to tell. I have worked really hard building Oberlin's Creative Writing Program—and as well as it's going, I'm eager to keep seeing how we can expand, evolve, and serve more students.
