About Emily Bulger, Phd
I am Developmental and Stem Cell Biologist at Gladstone Institutes and UCSF, with over 6 years of research experience in gene regulation, genome engineering, and hiPSC-based organoid modeling. I am committed to advancing our understanding of human embryonic development and its implications for health and disease.Throughout my Ph.D., I leveraged cutting-edge technologies such as single-cell multiomics, live cell imaging, and CRISPR/Cas9 to dissect the molecular mechanisms of mesodermal fate and patterning during gastrulation, a critical stage of development that gives rise to the heart and other organs. I have identified novel gene regulatory mechanisms that control the timing of cell ingression during this process and also helped engineer a new hiPSC-based organoid system that mimics aspects of human neural tube formation. I collaborate closely with my advisors, Dr. Benoit Bruneau and Dr. Todd McDevitt, and other members of our interdisciplinary team at Gladstone, and I have presented my work at internal and external meetings and symposia. Moving forward, I am excited to leverage the tools I've acquired in molecular and stem cell biology to conduct and effectively communicate transformative science in the private sector.

Postdoctoral Researcher
Ph.D. Candidate
- Advisors: Dr. Todd McDevitt and Dr. Benoit Bruneau (Gladstone Institutes)
- Utilized 2D and 3D in vitro stem cell models, 10x multiomics (snATAC + snRNA-seq), and live cell tracking analyses to define how gene dosage influences the gene regulatory networks underlying cell fate and patterning.
- Engineered a novel hiPSC-based organoid model to understand how cell populations such as neuromesodermal progenitors contribute to human neural tube development.
- Served as co-president of the Gladstone Graduate Organization for 2 years, including earning the Gladstone Team Excellence Award in 2022, directly advised a rotation student, served as a teaching assistant, and.
Intern
- Investigated novel approaches for establishing cell culture of non-model organisms, including salmon, to utilize cellular agriculture for food sustainability.
- Leveraged computational expertise in RNA-sequencing to identify key genetic engineering targets to help production goals.
- Worked closely with the genetic engineering team to plan and execute projects related to tissue engineering and genetic engineering in non-model organisms, resulting in formalized protocols and increased production.
Staff Research Associate
- Advisor: Dr. Ethan Bier
- Leveraged CRISPR/Cas9 technology and non-mendelian genetic cross schemes to generate and optimize anti-malarial gene-drive technology in Drosophila.
- Collected and established a laboratory stock of Hawaiian Drosophilids from the field for comparative HOX gene regulation experiments.
- Collaborated with postdocs and technicians to optimize experiments for large-scale genome engineering, including directly training five new technicians.
- Provided daily project status updates to my immediate team and presented work at both internal lab meetings and multi-university symposiums for collaborators.
Research Assistant
- Advisor: Rosemary Gillespie
- Conducted transcriptomic and proteomic analyses to investigate Hawaiian arthropods' phylogeny and venom composition.
Marine Invasions Intern
- Advisor: Dr. Gregory Ruiz
- Conducted genetics research using a metabarcode approach with high throughput sequencing technology to determine the diversity and host specificity of invasive parasites and their relationship to seagrass wasting.
- Funded through the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) Program.
Biology Peer Tutor And Lecturer
- Provided tutoring and study resources for a course of over 400 students.
- Planned and led comprehensive review lectures 4 hours per week and one-on-one tutoring 6 hours per week.
- Applied lessons taught during 40+ hours of training pertaining to lecturing, problem solving, and interpersonal relations.
Research Assistant
- Advisor: Dr. Gary Richards
