Emily Bulger, Phd Email and Phone Number
I am Developmental and Stem Cell Biologist at Gladstone Institutes and UCSF, with over 6 years of research experience in gene regulation, genome engineering, and hiPSC-based organoid modeling. I am committed to advancing our understanding of human embryonic development and its implications for health and disease.Throughout my Ph.D., I leveraged cutting-edge technologies such as single-cell multiomics, live cell imaging, and CRISPR/Cas9 to dissect the molecular mechanisms of mesodermal fate and patterning during gastrulation, a critical stage of development that gives rise to the heart and other organs. I have identified novel gene regulatory mechanisms that control the timing of cell ingression during this process and also helped engineer a new hiPSC-based organoid system that mimics aspects of human neural tube formation. I collaborate closely with my advisors, Dr. Benoit Bruneau and Dr. Todd McDevitt, and other members of our interdisciplinary team at Gladstone, and I have presented my work at internal and external meetings and symposia. Moving forward, I am excited to leverage the tools I've acquired in molecular and stem cell biology to conduct and effectively communicate transformative science in the private sector.

Ph.D. CandidateGladstone Institutes Aug 2018 - Feb 2024San Francisco, California, United StatesAdvisors: Dr. Todd McDevitt and Dr. Benoit Bruneau (Gladstone Institutes)• Utilized 2D and 3D in vitro stem cell models, 10x multiomics (snATAC + snRNA-seq), and live cell tracking analyses to define how gene dosage influences the gene regulatory networks underlying cell fate and patterning during human embryonic development, resulting in 4 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals including two first-author publications. • Engineered a novel hiPSC-based organoid model to understand how cell populations such as neuromesodermal progenitors contribute to human neural tube development. • Served as co-president of the Gladstone Graduate Organization for 2 years, including earning the Gladstone Team Excellence Award in 2022, directly advised a rotation student, served as a teaching assistant, and participated in academic collaborations. -
