In this role Emily has been involved in the design of affordable and energy efficient homes—accessory dwelling units (ADU) and multi-unit residential buildings (MURB).

In this role Emily has operated as an independent consultant for affordable housing projects and the associated supports (ie. daycare, clinic, programming space). This work has included the following types of engagements:- project management- funding development, project strategy and feasibility studies- architectural programming, planning and design- long term home maintenance and renovation plans- construction and site supervision- property management strategy- grant writingShe has worked for individual homeowners, independent investors, non-profits, the City of St. John's, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and completed self-led research projects (see attachments below).

In 2016, Emily Campbell was working as an intern architect and renting the spare room in her home on Airbnb. She was unable to find home products that worked for guests sensitive to scents and felt evocative of Newfoundland and Labrador. Long interested in foraging, preserving and craft, she decided to try her hand at making something herself. She picked up some essential oils, gathered spruce needles, juniper berries and got to work experimenting. The next fall, Emily brought soap and candles to her first market. She sold eight items, mostly to friends, and was (just) able to pay for her table at the market, but word started to spread. In 2018, she left her job and jumped in with both feet. In 2020, Yorabode moved to its first dedicated studio space and invested in a still and wax melter. Yorabode grew to a place where we makes thousands of candles a year and was run by a small dedicated team in downtown St. John’s, where Emily mentored the staff and works as the creative director and scent designer.Note on closing: I’ve made the incredibly hard decision to say goodbye for now and close our little St. John’s studio. 2024 will be Yorabode’s last year in business. I’ll be leaving with incredible gratitude to you all who supported me (and Lauren) in exploring how foraged botanicals and experiences of nature could enrich our homes. The consumer landscape has changed so much since I started and I’m struggling to find a way to exist in this space that feels aligned with my values and can also support my family and staff financially. I’m very proud of the brand, scents and following we’ve built over the past eight years. Thank you again for your support in allowing me to follow my dreams and make some very very nice smelling things.

Topics include architecture, urbanism, affordable housing, healthy home environments and the slow home movement.

Design, drafting, and project management for projects of various scales, building types and program. Projects include a housing needs assessment in a remote northern aboriginal community, design and project management for a community building in central Newfoundland, and a series of recreation pavilions on the Avalon Peninsula. I took on a leadership role throughout the duration of projects up to $4M construction value. I was also been involved in the firm's marketing and business development and completed some freelance work for the firm after being an employee.

Emily completed various internships as part of a co-op education and additional self-directed experience. During this time, with support and guidance she drew (construction, fabrication and concept), built models, wrote, assembled proposals, created presentations, built models, drew, created and monitored budgets, corresponded with clients, took as-built measurements, and created and mounted art installations. The types of projects she completed were multi-unit housing, single family homes, public art, healthcare and masterplanning.
