As part of my Masters, I worked with 3 other MSc students on a consultancy project commissioned by the UHBW NHS Trust to assess the sustainability of switching from Diesel to Renewable Diesel in their backup power to reach net zero by 2030. The client asked us to consider the environmental, economic and social sustainability of switching fuels as well as the broader policy context around it. We interviewed Carbon and Energy Managers at neighbouring Trusts that have already made the switch to supplement our research. Our project output was in the form of a 10,000 word report assessing the sustainability with specific policy recommendations, and a presentation of our findings to the client where we took questions from the audience. We received a distinction (the highest grade at Masters level) for our work and the client provided positive feedback. On top of contributing to the research and write-up phase, I was the project manager, responsible for maintaining contact with the client and overall management of the team and deadlines. It was great to work with other students in this area of expertise, including one who had previously worked as a carbon credits auditor in India.

During the Covid-19 period, many NHS staff had been redeployed to the frontline. I volunteered my time with the West Berkshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), mainly assisting with the Designated Clinical Officer's work. Work included helping to co-produce a SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) Local Area training directory for professionals and volunteers and helping to implement two linked initiatives, #Coping and Five Ways to Wellbeing, including providing input from a young person’s perspective on the design plans and campaign strategy. Both initiatives were aimed at promoting the good mental health and wellbeing of Children, Young People (CYP), Families and the general public over the Covid-19 period.
