I started my journey at JSE Design as an intern my second semester of graduate school. At the end of my fourth month, I was hired as a Jr. Designer. My primary responsibility has been analyzing project documentation to facilitate the procurement and construction process. With this position, I have also had the opportunity to engage in client meetings, as well as survey job site conditions. Last January, I lead my team in a series of tutorials for an interior design specification management program, Studio Webware. I came across the cloud-based software while doing some ancillary research and took the initiative to implement the program in the office, improving our office’s workflow and communication. My time at JSEhas been a valuable experience because it has exposed me to aspects of each design phase and allowed me to develop relationships with other professionals in corresponding fields.

The Cohler Internship and Travel Award is given to a rising senior enrolled in the Art and Architecture Department at Hobart and William Smith by alumni and interior designer, Eric Cohler. This award provided me with the opportunity to travel to London for two weeks, where I studied a self-driven curriculum that focused on Production Design. During this time abroad, I explored different mediums of production design from film to ballet at the British Film Institute, Wimbledon College of Arts and The Royal Opera House. I also met with the designer and art director Terry Ackland-Snow, known for his work in the 1989 Batman film, at London’s Pinewood Studios. This meeting exposed me to the number of iterative sketch’s and models that go into developing the visuals for any one film. For the internship portion of the award, I spent six weeks at Mr. Cohler’s interior design firm located in Manhattan. This experience introduced me to the logistics of working in a professional design setting. My role at Eric Cohler was to assist the designers in whatever capacity necessary. This experience quickly taught me that the key to maximizing my exposure to the design field was to ask questions and take initiative.
