Dr. Emily Rickman is an astronomer for the European Space Agency based at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, home to the mission and science operations of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Having published more than 60 refereed papers in high-impact journals across a broad scope of research interests from discovering and characterizing exoplanets to instrumentation, she leads an active research profile including being the Principal Investigator of a medium JWST Cycle 3 program to assess the atmospheric properties of giant planet analogs and is a member of the JWST Telescope Scientist Team for high-contrast imaging. In addition, Dr. Rickman is the documentation lead for the Space Telescope Instrument Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope and provides expertise for technical reviews as well as user support as an HST Science Operations Scientist.

Developed new techniques to directly image and spectrally characterize, and dynamically weigh exoplanets and brown dwarfs using both ground- and space-based observatories through several exoplanet detection and measurement techniques. -Principal Investigator of a JWST Cycle 3 medium program "Breaking the degeneracy: substellar anchors for evolutionary models", 30 hours awarded, along with a grant of $358,111-Documentation lead for the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) as a member of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) team.-Project-level member of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) telescope scientist team for coronagraphic imaging. -
Research FellowEuropean Space Agency - Esa Sep 2020 - Oct 2022Baltimore, Maryland, United StatesAwarded a competitive fellowship with the European Space Agency at the Space Telescope Science Institute throughout the launch period and commissioning of the most powerful space telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope. This included being the principal investigator of a commissioning plan for JWST/NIRSpec, alongside carrying out research in the area of exoplanets. Developed new techniques to incorporate radial velocity, direct imaging, and absolute astrometric data from ESA's archival mission Hipparcos and ESA's ongoing mission Gaia to comprehensively characterize benchmark brown dwarfs that act as analogs to directly image and characterize exoplanets.I led and was an active member in a number of proposals and programs including but not limited to:-Principal Investigator of VLTI/GRAVITY program: "Towards complete characterization of the benchmark brown dwarf HD13724B'"-Project-level member of JWST GTO Programs: "MIRI coronagraphy of the Cold Substellar Companion GJ 758 B'' and "Integral Field Spectroscopy of the Benchmark Substellar Companion HD19467B''-Co-Investigator of JWST NIRSpec/IFU Spectroscopy MIRI/LRS "Direct Imaging Spectroscopy of two Jovian Exoplanets: Characterization of the TYC 8998-760-1 Multi-Planetary System''-Science team member of ExoGRAVITY, LIFE mission concept team, SPHERE-SHINE, and NACO-ISPY-Member of JWST/NIRSpec commissioning team -- Principal Investigator `Evaluation of JWST+NIRSpec in-orbit point-spread function' -

Astrophysics Mission Design - Project ManagerNasa Jet Propulsion Laboratory Jan 2023 - Apr 2023Pasadena, California, United StatesSelected for a competitive program for NASA/JPL's inaugural astrophysics mission design school, which seeks to teach the process of developing a hypothesis-driven robotic space mission in a concurrent engineering environment while getting an in-depth, first-hand look at mission design, life cycle, costs, schedule and the trade-offs inherent in each.I was elected as Project Manager to lead the organization of the mission design team to develop a $1Billion, probe-class, space-based ultraviolet mission. The hypothesis-based science objectives of the mission were based on the 2020 Astrophysics Decadal Survey to target priority science questions of interest to NASA and the worldwide astrophysics community. Our early mission study concept response to the NASA Science Mission Directorate's Announcement of Opportunity ("2023 Astrophysics Probe Explorer") included designing the science traceability and working alongside JPL's Team-X to develop instrumentation and engineering requirements for our mission. -

Postgraduate ResearcherUniversity Of Geneva Jul 2016 - Jun 2020Geneva, SwitzerlandWorked with Dr. Damien Ségransan on a large survey to direct image exoplanets around young stars in the mid-infrared. High contrast imaging survey of nearby stars with debris disks to detect and characterize giant planets in wide orbits, including 120 nights on VLT/NACO. Also a member of the SPHERE-SHINE consortium with 200 nights on VLT/SPHERE.Principal investigator of 5 successful observing proposals on the VLT with SPHERE on direct imaging and spectral characterization of ultra-cool companions to Solar type stars, as well as atmospheric characterization and orbital monitoring of brown dwarf companions from radial velocity surveys.Co-ordinator of the long period radial velocity exoplanets search using the CORALIE spectrograph on EULER in La Silla, Chile, looking for giant planets and brown dwarfs to image using VLT/SPHEREAs part of my Ph.D., I gained over 50 nights of experience observing on large telescopes (NACO/VLT at Paranal, Chile, and EULER at La Silla, Chile). -
Research AssistantUniversity Of Sheffield Jun 2015 - Aug 2015Sheffield, United KingdomI was awarded funding by the competitive Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) for a summer research position between the third and fourth year of my Master's degree. The project involved investigating the feeding of cavity-polariton states with multiple lasers to determine theoretically if photons injected by a second laser can generate polaritons that substitute those participating in the pre-existing polariton flow. The project involved extensive use of Mathematica and presenting findings to a small audience, as well as a written report and presenting a poster.
