Colleagues describe her as "Inspired by her work in our lab, Emily designed an independent research project for her senior thesis. Her work examined responses to drought in common goldfields (Lasthenia gracilis), an important species used in revegetation projects across California. She planned her research well in advance, working on the design and details of this project for about six months. Her experiment was extremely well planned and was based on thorough background research. During this study Emily demonstrated her resourcefulness, finding and re-using containers in creative ways and working with what we had in the lab to implement many replicates with limited expense or waste. She also initiated smaller trial runs of the experiment, showing foresight and patience. Emily is also a strong leader, and organized a group of students to help successfully set up and implement her project. Project Biologist
CurrentIn working with A-T-S as a project biologist, I am working to meet the biological survey and monitoring needs of several clients including SF Public Utilities Commission. In this role, I collect and analyze data to assess factors such as native plant health, non-native invasive plant occurrence throughout restoration sites, presence of nesting birds and other special status animal species, and more. I am also the project manager for A-T-S's contracts with PG&E. Through working with A-T-S, I am greatly increasing my knowledge of native California plants; herps and birds; riparian, coastal, wetland, and woodland ecosystems. I am also gaining more experience with the way natural resources are managed in the Bay Area through project management, coordination, and technical report writing.
Watershed Stewards Program Corpsmember
I am thrilled to be a corpsmember in the Watershed Stewards Program, a special program within the California Conservation Corps. I am working in partnership with the Marin Municipal Water District in the fisheries department to monitor and enhance habitat for endangered coho salmon and threatened steelhead trout that live the freshwater portions of their lives in the streams of Marin County. To do this, I am conducting spawner surveys, smolt trapping, PIT tagging, snorkel surveys, data analysis, and GIS.In addition, I am excited to be organizing community events to engage the public with topics including riparian habitat restoration and water conservation. I am honing volunteering recruitment skills and partnering with local organizations to amplify their reach. I am also partnering with a local Title I elementary school to teach a 5-lesson classroom curriculum about the importance of watershed health and water conservation. In addition, I am working with the vegetation management team on projects to decrease erosion of stream banks and increase the abundance of native flora.
Botany Intern
This summer I am excited to be working with NPS employees on various vegetation projects throughout Haleakala National Park. Major projects include:- monitoring native species planted in several experimental plots on previous ranch land- propagating native plants in the Park nursery greenhouse- backpacking or helicoptering to the backcounty to outplant native plants for restoration- collecting and cleaning seeds for addition to the seed bank- data collection and management for annual vegetation Inventory and Monitoring- management of invasive plant species in the rainforest backcountry- water quality testing for biological health of several waterfalls throughout the parkIn addition, I was able to attend the Hawaii Conservation Conference which gave me an inspiring glimpse into the long history of stewardship and aloha ʻāina on the islands. As a defacto ranger while in uniform in the backcountry, I honed visitor communication skills and cultural awareness and sensitivity.
Special Projects: Waste Management
For the winter season, I worked with three on-mountain cafes to help achieve Vail's ambitious Net-Zero Carbon by 2030 goal. I aided in the dissemination of information about the recycling, landfill, and compost programs and performed hands-on waste sorting. Plus, I got to ski to and from locations!
Consultant
I am excited to be working as an environmental consultant on the Due Diligence team! In this dynamic position, I balance numerous deadlines for a diverse set of projects ranging from industrial site audits and associated Phase 1 and Limited Environmental Compliance Review reports to litigation support. One of my favorite projects includes life-cycle analysis of greenhouse gas emissions for new solar power plants compared to existing coal power plants. I have also had the chance to contribute to data collection and analysis for several soil and groundwater remediation projects.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
I am working closely with a graduate student to study changes in phenology of native California flowers (specifically Lasthenia californica pictured above!) through a combination of lab, greenhouse, and field work. I am also building on previous species identification skills by creating a CA Grasslands Species List to be used in future field work in the lab. This experience was vital to facilitating my undergraduate thesis, a greenhouse ecological study of drought impacts on the phenology and success of native California wildflowers. The final presentation won best talk at the California Botanical Society's Graduate Symposium in 2019.
Vice President
Leading academic and social meetings to support Environmental Science majors at Cal, including a weekend-long group camping trip each semester.
Intern
As an intern with the Environmental Science team at Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, Inc, I contribute to environmental sampling and construction oversight at contracted sites as well as data entry for Phase II environmental site assessments. Environmental sampling includes taking water level measurements, conducting soil sampling, performing smoke tests, and more. Through shadowing a full-time employee, I also gain an in-depth look into the professional life of an environmental consultant.
Visitor Service Representative
As a Visitor Service Rep, I facilitated hands-on engineering exhibits and provided additional exhibit-enriching education at a children’s science museum. I also planned and led extra “pop-up” activities such as recycled sailboats and gigantic geometry!
Camp Counselor
At this summer day camp, I assisted an outdoor science school teacher in leading hikes and games for elementary-aged children. I also created, planned, and led my own activities such as outdoor games and arts and crafts.
