As a Graduate Student Intern with the Athens Wellbeing Project, my primary responsibilities included the following: 1) producing a Community Safety Report that consists of quantitative and qualitative analysis of survey data to gain community perceptions of safety and experiences with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department (ACCPD) and ACCPD 911 Call Center, 2) creating reports using primary and secondary data on a variety of public health topics regarding the Athens community including health and healthcare, behavioral health, food insecurity, pedestrian safety, and homeless and transitional families, 3) co-authoring and co-editing white papers that focus on workforce development and childcare, predatory lending, and pedestrian safety in Athens-Clarke County, 4) developing a survey for the ACCPD that aims to gain community perceptions on the use of force by police, 5) performing data analysis and coding on primary and secondary data sources, and 6) participating in events that promote awareness and involvement in the organization's work.

Working as a Graduate Research Assistant for a professor in the Global Health Department, my main duties involved supporting research projects that involve community active case finding, transmission patterns, and treatment interventions/evaluations of Tuberculosis disease. To support these projects, I performed data verification on questionnaire responses using the software program Teleform and conducted data analysis using R on VDOT, UCDOT, and baseline questionnaires to identify characteristics/factors associated with Tuberculosis cases. In addition to data verification and analysis, I developed reports that summarize the key findings of the data analysis results and identified any discrepancies in the questionnaires, coding books, and data. Another task included constructing training grant tables for University of Georgia faculty that involved gathering faculty information from a variety of sources.

Through my internship at Delta Air Lines in the Global Cleanliness Organization, I gained valuable experience and skills that launched my career as a public health professional. My primary responsibility was leading and conducting a research project over a 5-month period that focused on identifying pathogen risk in Delta’s travel ribbon. Major tasks of this project included identifying prominent pathogens in public spaces, collecting information on Delta’s current disinfecting protocols, evaluating the effectiveness of Delta’s cleaning processes against pathogens, and identifying the gaps in the cleaning protocols to make recommendations. Other responsibilities included tracking the disposal status of e-sprayer batteries for domestic and global airports by communicating daily with the station managers and updating Excel documents, creating and illustrating processes for the provisioning of items onto the aircraft, leading weekly meetings to report project updates, and researching innovative ways to improve cleanliness and cleaning processes on the aircraft. Additionally, I visited airports to observe and evaluate Delta cleaning processes in the travel ribbon, participated in an ATP study on the aircraft that tests for effectiveness of Delta cleaning products and cleaning techniques on various surfaces in the aircraft, and created a trifold display that aimed to promote health and safety among Delta employees by illustrating cleaning processes, use of PPE, and my research project results.
