Ms. Benner is a recently evacuated Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV) where she served as a Youth Development Officer in Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). In this role she and her cohort worked alongside Peace Corps in-country Staff and Host Country Nationals (HCNs) to meet the Eswatini Government’s overall goal to help Swati youth effectively transition to becoming healthy, productive, and community engaged adults. Ms. Benner supported this project goal by facilitating numerous in-school and community-based projects/activities. In order for activities/projects to be successful and sustainable, she recognized the critical importance of intentionally building meaningful relationships with a variety of stakeholders and community members. Using her keen sense of context and high emotional intelligence, she was tactful in all personal interactions, listening to understand rather than to respond. She was also able to navigate difficult conversations and situation because of her competency in cross-cultural communication. Her respect and dedication to the mission of Peace Corps to spread peace and friendship informed everything she did while serving her Swati community.
