Interning at the Department of State was a dream internship for me that combined my passions for International Relations and East African Affairs. Building on my time studying abroad in Nairobi, Kenya and interning with USAID, this internship grew my passion for working on issues related to sub-Saharan Africa and working for the U.S. Government. While in this role, some of my tasks included: - Scheduled, prepared, and accompanied the Ambassador-Designate on high level, pre-departure consultations that briefed him before his tour in Dar es Salaam. - Developed comprehensive knowledge of country and regional issues, briefing senior officials on pressing policy decisions, drafting memos and communication for agency consultations, and leading the connection between the Department of State and the Embassy of Tanzania. - Facilitated communication between Embassy Dar es Salaam and stateside officials at the Department of State.

The Organization for Youth in Environmental and Educational Affairs (OFYENEDA) is a grassroots organization in Nairobi, Kenya that works to empower the youth intellectually and economically to help them address poverty & illiteracy. OFYENEDA does this by meeting problems where they are located and promoting collaboration among all stake holders including other nonprofits, government and funders. In my role with OFYENEDA, I have been working on identifying points of intervention and fundraising with the organizational partner Joseph Kangethe Rehabilitation Centre. I am working to help this center grow and continue to accommodate 50+ street-children and give them an education in sustainable practices.
Intern
In this role I was able to assist the Great Lakes team in the East Africa bureau of USAID in day-to-day operations, policy formulation, and logistical planning. One of greatest accomplishments in this role was creating and implementing a "Google Guide" distributed to the entire bureau, leading a day long retreat on the material, and leading supplemental weekly trainings. I additionally worked with USAID resources to plan a day long office retreat to work on team goal setting and bonding, and planned three Africa Bureau brownbags with the Department of State and the National Security Council. I also enjoyed the challenge of backstopping all seven country portfolios (Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, and Burundi) at different parts of the summer and staying up to day on relevant policy issues.

Program Leader
In this role I was able to work as a program leader for one of my favorite undergraduate professors, Bram Groen, and assist him in a first year seminar class that I had taken during my freshman year. This role allowed me to: - Curated the curriculum of a first-year seminar class on global citizenship that included organizing and managing six lab excursions around Washington D.C. to supplement the class material. - Mentored 17 students through their first-year experience via weekly office hours and in-class programming.
Senate Intern
I loved having the opportunity to serve my home state of North Carolina though the office of Senator Thom Tillis. This internship allowed me to learn more about the Legislative process and engage with American Democracy first hand. Throughout the course of this internship I: - Resolved constituent concerns by communicating up to date policy knowledge and connecting them with the relevant resources. -Analyzed and advised the office on environmental policy in North Carolina by preparing policy briefs, with a focus on the Farm Bill and its implications in the state. -Educated North Carolina citizens on United States history through Capitol tours and informational sessions.

My roles at Atlas Corps included: -Cold outreached to over 1,000 leading US based organizations to host global change leaders. -Assisted in a four-day leadership summit for fellows that included organizing travel arrangements for 70 fellows based around the country, creating event agendas, and developing leadership programming. -Conducted global interviews with potential Atlas Corps fellows to find the top level of global talent and create the most effective U.S. placements.
