I provide leadership and strategic direction for the planning, building inspections, housing and economic development, and engineering divisions. I lead the department’s DEI work and support the department supervisors and employees, ensuring alignment with the Just Deeds Coalition work and the Just Belonging platform. I assist the City Manager with legislative priorities, capital projects, public facility planning, and special projects, including coordinating assigned projects with the business and development communities, City staff, and other community partners. The department includes 20 full-time staff, plus interns and other seasonal/temporary staff members.

Inspire and educate members of the American Planning Association to critically evaluate who their planning work is serving, recognize the harm that urban planning has had on many different people, grow relationships with prospective and current planners of color, and support the evolution of the planning industry. We meet monthly to discuss pertinent issues and plan many educational events.I started as a Committee Member in August 2020 and was appointed co-chair in January 2021.

My fellow co-chair Breanne Rothstein and I launched the first-ever Mentorship Program for the Chapter. We had 42 participants for the 2017-2018 year and about 40 for the 2018-2019 year. As volunteer capacity for the chapter allows, more Mentorship Programs will be offered.

Our department leads many projects essential to the City’s Strategic Plan. The department includes the Building Official, Parks Planner, Assistant Planner, and Permit Technician. As a small staff with big responsibilities, we manage several consultants that help us execute our strategic priorities.

UrbanPlan is an experiential educational program focused on teaching students about the trade-offs and realities of redevelopment. We offer the curriculum to three local high schools: Roseville, Saint Paul Central, and Moundsview. Our ability to grow the program is largely dependent on teacher interest, volunteer capacity, and sponsorship support.

YLG brings opportunities for learning, networking, and contributing to shared goals. Subcommittees were managed by members of the YLG Executive Committee. While I was co-chair, we increased membership and gained deeper participation by members. Thankful to have contributed to the Adaptive Cycle work that informed strategy for the ULI MN District Council Management and Governance Committee decisions.

I work in the Physical Development Department, which includes Planning, Engineering, Inspections, and Public Works. I perform a variety of tasks related to comprehensive planning, zoning, transit planning, and economic development. I also apply for grant funds and administer any grants awarded.

The Community Advisory Committee (CAC) for the Snelling-Midway Redevelopment Site provides community input on the site plan for a major league soccer stadium and the master plan for redevelopment of the 34.5 acre superblock. This committee worked to promote energy-efficient construction and renovation of homes in various ways. In 2014, we focused on the Dynamic Green Home projects in the Frogtown and Dayton's Bluff neighborhoods of St. Paul. Check it out online!

I worked with Meg McMonigal and other Planning staff on a variety of projects related to land use, comprehensive planning, zoning, transportation, and economic development. In preparation for the construction of the LRT Green Line extension (opening day expected 2019), I assisted with the creation of form-based codes for light rail station areas. I also researched future bicycle and pedestrian facilities/amenities to be provided at stations. Using ArcGIS, I created and edited several different maps. To prepare our Economic Development Assistant for business meetings, I updated maps showing recent development activity. I also mapped all billboards in the City and included a detailed list and set of photos. I also updated the St. Louis Park zoning map to reflect recent changes. A great deal of my work focused on applications brought forward to the Board of Zoning Appeals, Planning Commission, and City Council. I wrote two staff reports for variance requests (fence height and side yard setbacks) and presented the recommendations to the Board of Zoning Appeals. I completed a staff report for a Conditional Use Permit application, which I presented to Planning Commission and City Council. Research, writing, public speaking, and mapping were the largest components of my work. I primarily used Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Publisher, and ArcGIS in this position.

I completed an analysis of vacant, publicly-owned land in North Minneapolis for its suitability for urban agriculture projects. The research will inform the North Minneapolis Urban Agriculture and Community Development Plan. This was a graduate student research position in conjunction with AfroEco and Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA). AfroEco exists to organize a new relationship between blacks and the land and is involved in environmental justice and food sovereignty. CURA is part of the University of Minnesota. My research was completed in early January 2014 and it is posted on CURA's website along with many other student research projects.

I worked on projects such as Green Homes North, TIF Tornado Recovery Housing Program, Twin Cities Green Product and Service Directory, Minneapolis Building Rating and Disclosure Policy, North Minneapolis Industrial Development Information/Pitch Packet. My supervisors worked throughout CPED - Community Planning and Economic Development - at City of Minneapolis.

I have been volunteering with the Land Trust since August 2010. The land trust is an important model for perpetual affordable housing and community development. In 2011, I contacted area businesses to ask if they would provide a small discount to the roughly 200 CLCLT members. In the future, I hope to tell participants of the Homestretch homeowner's orientations about the Land Trust. Mostly, I just enjoy the company of this wonderful staff of hard-working and dedicated individuals.

I make efficiency improvements to homes in Saint Paul with the Home Energy Squad. This work is in conjunction with Americorps, Conservation Corps of Minnesota and Iowa, and Neighborhood Energy Connection. I was promoted to a crew leader position after 6 months at this company and will be employed there until July 2012 when my Americorps term of service is finished.

I usually do individual volunteer days with the program called A Brush With Kindness, which involves home rehabs.

I was the first point of contact for students interested in studying abroad. I also promoted the program in classrooms and at large events. I worked on various promotional materials, corresponded with foreign universities, and handled day to day office duties.

During my senior year of undergraduate studies, I assisted city planners on the development of the city's new zoning code. I attended several public meetings and stakeholder meetings, organized and responded to public comments, made summaries for public releases, wrote the 2009 Scenic Byway update for Skyline Parkway, and helped create a sustainability points system for the code.

I started volunteering with MPIRG in my first month of undergraduate and quickly excelled to a leadership position. I had a lot of fun planning the Free Democracy Summits of 2007 and 2008. I learned a lot about legislation, public policy, civic engagement, and public action during my time with MPIRG. I attended Camp Wellstone and wrote a report on politics the Wellstone way during my internship. Great memories.

Three students at UMD created a new organization for fellow students interested in raising awareness of the college's role in promoting sustainable practices. The first and most important initiative for the group was to present the case for the creation of a sustainability director at UMD. We presented to a financial committee with our case. The position was created a year later.
