Green Labs Intern

Office Of Energy & Sustainability

San Diego State University

I am spearheading the development of the Green Labs program at San Diego State University through the Office of Energy and Sustainability. I am responsible for researching realistic sustainable approaches for laboratories and encouraging campus programs to implement sustainable practices. In the Office of Energy and Sustainability I am able to collaborate on larger projects with other interns and participate in outreach events.

Research Assitant

Clark Lab

San Diego, California, United States

In the Clark Lab I assisted with three different herpetology focused research projects. More specifically, I assisted in snake behavior data collection and flat-tail horned lizard field work in El Centro, California. I used cameras to validate accelerometer data, a pendulum apparatus to test pit organ use in non-venomous snakes, and radiotelemetry to locate flat-tailed horned lizards.

Research Assistant

Marine Conservation Ecology Lab

In the Hovel Lab, I completed my Senior Captone project on the impact of eelgrass heterogeneity on natural invertebrate communities in summer and winter months. I collected data on eelgrass blade compositions, epifauna weight, and eelgrass biomass. At the Coastal Marine Institute Laboratory, I measured the pH, oxygen concentration, salinity, and temperature of ongoing experiments and conducted kelpfish and pipefish husbandry tasks. During my time in the lab, I was able to assist in collecting eelgrass epifauna and eelgrass samples for use in lab experiments.

Research Assistant

South Sulawesi, Indonesia

I accompanied Dr. Erin Riley and her master's students on an immersive research experience in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. As an undergraduate research student, I worked alongside Indonesian students from Hasanuddin University to learn research methods for anthropological primate research. We studied moor macaque monkeys in the Bantimurung National Park by taking group and focal samplings, as well as identifying what foods they were eating to assess their diet. My mini project was focused on the behavior of cheek pouching, and the demographics associated with it. I also participated in field research with Dr. Erin Riley's colleague, Dr. Pa Oka. We identified tree species to use in a food index and took DBH measurements and GPS points. I also helped Dr. Pa Oka with collecting tree litter for his lab to use for assessing climate change effects in different types of forests.Throughout my 6 weeks in Indonesia, I gained a lot of research experience, and unforgettable cultural experiences that exposed me to different ways of living and challenged me to grow professionally and personally.
