Research assistant on CHIP (Cognitive Health in Indianapolis Project), a study of cognitive functioning in adults, 65 and older. I conducted a battery of cognitive tests, as well as a physical examination of participants annually, and also completed an interim phone interview every six months. Additionally, each participant designated an "informant" (usually a family member or friend), to answer questions about the participant's cognition. I scored the results of these tests and interview, before sending them to a consensus panel of experts in the field. At consensus participants were categorized as either "normal", CIND (cognitively impaired no dementia), or CI with probable dementia or similar diagnosis.

As the Employment Specialist of the ACT (Assertive Community Treatment) team I worked with 50+ individuals who were diagnosed with a severe mental illness. The ACT model was developed to help those with the most severe types of mental illness, who are not currently hospitalized. Each client on the ACT team had one or more mental health diagnosis, and had either 2 or more mental health hospitalizations within one year of intake to the ACT team, or a diagnosis of substance abuse. Among my responsibilities were standard case management tasks and working with clients on activities of daily living. The wrap-around service provided by ACT also included an internal mobile medication service, in which we would deliver daily medications to those who needed help to manage their schedule. I provided community guidance to individuals and offered suggestions to assist with managing their mental health that aligned with their treatment plan. Each case manager on the ACT team also provided support to those experiencing substance abuse and assisted clients with the development of emotional coping skills and relationships. As the employment specialist, I led a weekly group to discuss topics related to employment and job seeking, as well as addressing other factors that could help or hinder the job placement/retention process. Using this patient-centered approach we designed plans for each client that aligned with their stated preferences. In my role I was certified as a Supportive Employment Specialist through the SECT Center, in Anderson, IN. I assisted my clients with resume building, job seeking, interviewing skills, relationship building, and symptom management in the workplace. I worked closely with Vocational Rehabilitation, in order to obtain sponsorship for clients who returned to work or school.
