About Emily Starbuck Gerson

I'm an award-winning full-time freelance journalist, an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community and military families, and a Texan in the DC area for my wife's military career (after three years in England). I'm two-time winner of an NLGJA - Association of LGBTQ Journalists Award (2019 for “Excellence in Long Form Journalism" and 2022 for “Excellence in Political Coverage”). I've been a professional wordsmith, creative, content marketer, communicator, and storyteller for over 15 years, with expertise in both editorial and marketing writing. (But a preference for editorial and human-focused!) I have significant experience covering beats such as LGBTQIA, military, caregiving, personal finance, small business, travel, and wellness/self-improvement.I recently spent nearly two-and-a-half years as the contract Editor-in-Chief of the quarterly publication for nonprofit Modern Military Association of America (MMAA). I worked with leadership to plan, assign, write, and edit content for Modern Military Magazine to represent and advocate for the LGBTQ+ military-connected community. My role later expanded to Editorial Director, leading additional initiatives such as email newsletters, blogs, guides, and speeches. I also gained significant knowledge about military policy and LGBTQ-focused legislation. I departed in February 2022 after organizational changes, but I returned as magazine editor in July 2024 and am thrilled to be back. Besides overseeing the magazine, I support other content needs and participate in various advocacy efforts as needed. My articles have been published in dozens of publications and websites, including Yamaha, INTO, USA Today, Experian, CNBC, Business Insider, The Christian Science Monitor, The Chicago Tribune, and Consumers Digest magazine. I have also spent many years professionally editing marketing and editorial copy, along with developing content strategy and utilizing SEO.I also spend a significant amount of time working in military advocacy, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and sometimes, both at the same time. I served two years on the Advisory Board for Military Family Advisory Network. Between 2023-2024, I also completed a year-long foreign policy fellowship for military spouses with Secure Families Initiative. I served on the San Antonio chapter of Human Rights Campaign and volunteered with that organization, along with other LGBTQ+ orgs such as Out Youth, Fiesta Youth, and more.
