About Emily Watson
It's good to meet you!My name is Emily Watson. I am a senior astrophysics major with a computer science minor at Minnesota State University Moorhead. I am projected to graduate in the spring of 2025. During my time at MSUM I have worn many hats. As a undergraduate researcher under my advisor Dr. Matthew Craig I have studied exoplanet candidates for the TESS Ground Based Observers Program. For my senior project studying a variable star in Ursa Major to attempt to better understand its periodicity.Along with this research, I work at the MSUM planetarium. As a senior member, I work writing and presenting shows to the Fargo Moorhead community. I take pride in being an active member of the physics and astronomy department at MSUM. During my time here I helped restart the MSUM Student Astronomy club, acting as president and treasurer. Along with this I have been President, Vice President, and Treasurer of our Society of Physics Students chapter. With this, I was inducted into the Sigma Pi Sigma honors society in spring of 2023. Finally, over the summer of 2024 I had the privilege working as an intern at the Neuroradiology Advanced Imaging Lab at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. During this time I worked with image detection models to detect implanted devices in medical images and patient records.

CurrentOver the last three years I have had the opportunity to work under my advisor to study both exoplanets and variable stars. I worked with the TESS Ground Based Observers program to study exoplanet candidates. Along with this, I am studying the RR Lyrae variable star EY UMa. I am currently analyzing its period as well as the Blazhko effect seen in this star.

Planetarium Presenter And Writer
CurrentAt the MSUM Planetarium my responsibilities include writing and presenting weekly astronomy shows to the Fargo Moorhead community. In 2023, I was a part of a NASA CATT grant to write and produce programming about the James Webb Space Telescope and what it is doing to search for water in and out of the solar system. Along with this, I write and produce a monthly star talk for the community to ask an astronomer and learn about the night sky as it changes each month.

Undergraduate Researcher In The Neuroradiology Advanced Imaging Lab
through this internship in the Undergraduate Research Employment Program (UREP) I had the opportunity to work in the Neuroradiology Advanced Imaging Lab (NAIL). During this time I worked creating training material from medical images for a project using object detection models in YOLOv8. Another part of this project involved analyzing a dataset of patient records to confirm algorithms flagged implanted devices correctly.
