Survivor. That is the best adjective to describe me. I was born in Bosnia & Herzegovina and was forced to flee my home country at the age of 6 due to a horrific civil war. My family settled in Germany where we started a new life with only the items we could pack into our small car. It was commonplace for me to spend days helping translate for family and friends at doctors and residency offices at the age of 8. Our visas in Germany however were only temporary and the family immigrated to the US when I was 11 years old. Again, my family was forced to start anew and this time with only the suitcases we could check into our flights to the United States. Most recently, I was diagnosed with a Stage 2 cancer that had spread within my body. I underwent 9 weeks of intensive chemotherapy while not missing any work. The cancer is now gone and there are no signs of recurrence. Those life experiences have made me a strong-minded individual that is willing and able to lead.
