After my psychology degree and PGCE I went into education, and have taught ages from 4 to adult, in Westminster, Essex, and across the Eastern Region. My focus has always been on children with SEN; working directly with them in schools and at an outdoor education centre, or training the adults that work with them. I know that children will only make progress and take their place in the World when the people who teach them see and know them as individuals. In 11 years in a residential SEMH Academy, with the last 6 as Head Teacher, I have been able to lead the school to "Good" and "Outstanding" Ofsted judgements using Trauma informed practice and relationships as the core of everything we did.I now use my previous experience in my work for the Prison, Advice and Care Trust, supporting men who are in custody and their families. I find that my understanding of child development and the effects of trauma help me to support people who have often experienced complex trauma in their past. The work we do helps them and their families to move forward in a positive way, developing their understanding of their own relationships, and learning how to express their emotions in more healthy ways.
