Math Tutor
I work as a math tutor through the University. As a tutor, I work in a room that is specific to a certain Math class. It is my job to help anyone in that room with any question. Often, that entails balancing helping multiple people at once or helping with a math question over a subject I haven't done in years. It can be very mentally challenging to think of a variety of ways to explain a subject and balance teaching in a very busy environment but it's very rewarding. I get to help lots of students understand something that is difficult to them.
Research Assistant
I was originally hired to assist PhD candidate students in Dr. Handan Acar's lab, which transitioned to doing independent research within a couple semester. In the Spring 2022 semester, I worked in this lab for my Honors Research requirement. I was allowed to continue working in the lab after this program finished; During the 2022-2023 school year, I was granted an opportunity to get paid for my work. In this lab, I was taught cell passaging, peptide synthesis, and DPH & ThT assays. I performed a multitude of DPH and ThT assays with no help from faculty. I was trusted by my Principal Investigator to act as a liaison between our lab and another lab in a joint research venture looking at aggregation of amyloid beta proteins.
Antibody Discovery Summer Intern
The team I interned with used yeast display to find peptide-HLA-E targets for cancer immunotherapy. In this lab, I had the opportunity to learn many new skills, including cell culture and fume hood work, as well as having the opportunity to execute several procedures myself. I ended the summer with two cumulative presentations explaining my work.
Honors College Mentor
I was paired with an incoming Honors college student and became their mentor. All year, I was in charge of periodically checking in with my mentee and providing help in any areas they needed. This role required me to be resourceful, caring, and responsible enough to be a mentor to a younger student.
Unpaid Research Intern- Fyre Program
The Honors College at my University offers a research opportunity for First Year students called the FYRE (First Year Research Experience) program where, if selected, they are paired with a research faculty member to work in their lab for a semester. It was a great way to get research and lab experience early in my college career. I worked in a Biochemistry lab performing several common genetic procedures such as PCR, gene cloning, plasmid purification, and electroporation. The semester long program concluded with me presenting my lab activities and findings to a board of research faculty.
Employee
I worked here after high school to earn money to pay for college. It is a shop where customers buy blank pottery and paint it. I assisted and directed clients (both adults and children) and developed interpersonal skills working behind the checkout desk as well as helping customers around the shop.
