Project title: ‘Characterising the human virome in febrile patients’It is likely that clinically important viruses are circulating undetected in developing countries and contributing to the burden of infectious disease. To test this hypothesis, I am analysing blood from two cohorts of febrile patients, using a metagenomic sequencing approach to detect novel or unexpected viruses. In the latter part of the project, viruses isolated from patient samples will be used to investigate the human immune response.

Research scientist within the Wildlife Zoonoses and Vector-Borne Diseases Research Group at APHA Weybridge. I worked mainly on rabies and rabies-related viruses, both in research and diagnostics.Main duties:• Prepared written proposals, reports, and manuscripts for peer reviewed publication• Prepared and delivered oral and poster presentations at national and international scientific meetings• Trained and supervised visiting national and international scientists and students, using my technical expertise and strong inter-personal skills• Undertook virology research with a high level of autonomy, managing my own time and workload effectively• Wrote risk assessments and standard operating procedures which were used within a quality management system
